It's easy to get guns anywhere in the USA.

Places where guns aren't given out like prizes in crackerjack boxes and in which owning a gun doesn't have a mystique, a fetish and a "culture" have lower murder rates by gun than the USA, and lower murder rates overall.

Thousands and thousands of violent homicides, suicides and accidental deaths is the price you pay for your "freedom". Most people in civilized nations are quite happy to be not as "free".

Notice that the crimes occur in DC, not in Virginia, where it's perfectly legal to Conceal Carry. The criminals purchasing the guns (yes it is illegal to purchase a gun in a state you don't reside in) go to DC because they KNOW that everyone there is disarmed and an easy target. They don't stay in VA where it's not a sure thing.

Having a gun is for defense, not blowing away bad guys; it's for defending your life and your families lives. In most cases, a gun used for defense is never even fired. Just them fact that someone is armed will likely scare off an intruder. Even in the rare cases that a gun is fired, most of the time the criminal is not killed. Use of a firearm for defense where the criminal was not killed is not tracked in many cases. But to ignore non-deadly instances, while only focusing on deaths is not a valid method when using statistics to debate gun control issues.

The average police response time in most large cities is about ten minutes, suburban and rural response times can be much higher than that. Are you comfortable waiting that long?
