I'm not saying this story is old, but I have some Time Life books published in the 70s and one of them has a story and pictures about this place. I remember reading it as a kid and being fascinated by the photos. Ok, I guess I am saying this story is old. Still really interesting though.

Empty windswept valleys and hordes of squawking shiatting birds. Can't imagine why they haven't been back in years.

I didn't realize penguins enjoyed living in their own filth quite that much.

The chapter in here on Mawson and other early adventurers to the South Pole is one of the best chapters I have read in my life. It's amazing that Mawson came close to death so many times and, all his companions dead, wandered in the blinding white alone, delirious and half-alive.

Only a Victorian-era Aussie would make sure to pack his own fapping material on an Antarctic expedition.

It's 100 years old, in fact.

TFA, on the other hand, is a blog that's got entries dating back along this last week.
