" the jet stream was far north and fairly straight, and stayed that way for an unusually long time."

Which is why Alaska got 25 feet of snow? There are some climate models that show global warming inducing glaciation -- I wonder if this kind of jet stream phenomenon fits those models.

I wonder if it is just a bit late in coming. Here in Stockholm it had been very warm, almost 50 degrees a couple days after Christmas, hell I was in London a couple weeks ago and there were freaking tulips blooming

Then, it suddenly turned to mostly normal weather for winter. Our lake got about 8 inches of ice in a few days, and it has been nice and cold. I am just curious to see where it goes from here.

If the AO flips, which there is a decent chance that it could, then we could still see a normal winter. Possibly even a very cold second half, depending on how strong it flips.

Yes. At least, that's what the article says.

Estonia chiming in. Same here. Warmest winter I can remember in 10 years, and we didn't get any snow until New Year's. But yesterday it's back to normal. I underdressed, and I was shivering for 30 minutes after getting home.

Don't like the weather? Wait - it will change.

It wasn't one of the driest, warmest winters in history, and even if it was it was nothing to do with humans, and furthermore.

there is nothing that doesn't fit the models. that's why the science is worthless

Over in the Pac Nor'West, it's been the year without a summer becoming the year without a winter. I've roses blooming right now in my yard for fark's sake. Look mighty strange with a little bit of snow on them from the first anything-frozen-from-the-sky weather this morning. Nothing like last February's 70+ degree days, but that month hasn't arrived yet.

I want my cold, ice and snow, dammit! Quit bogarting the snow, Alaska!

Well, I moved 3 months ago to the Midwest (Iowa) and having never seen snow in my life (used to live near the equator) I thought by now I'd be inches deep in snow.

There was some snow a few days ago, but it has melted mostly by now, and last week we had like 60F. I wouldn't like it to change thankyouverymuch I'm very used to 100F all year

We just got our first blast of snow 2 days ago. Last year we'd probably had a dozen or so by now.

I hope it's a short winter because currently I am completely stuck in the house and can't make execute any of my brilliant schemes that involve going outside.

Here in my little slice o'heaven there were epic amounts of rainfall this year, breaking records and all that. Glad to see a blue sky, no snow, no ice, why yes my heirloom rose is blooming right now, as is the rosemary.
No one has figured out any of the perceived/real/whatever climate change that is going on. Sure the ice caps are melting-have the shore lines tidal levels increased as a result? What about the percentage of saline saturation in said oceans? Decreased? Sun spots do whut? Gee, there's a lot of snow in Alaska???? A state that has....glacier parks? And they're upset that the glaciers are receding, but upset that they have a lot of snow????
Everyone is pointing fingers/statistics at everyone else-it's a jumble of statistics, mixed reports, mixed up scientists, different scientific disciplines and jus' perfect for FARK!

Scared for next summer and fire hazard in northern MN and North western WI. a huge windstorm, 60-100mph straight line winds, knocked down huge swaths of pine and misc other trees. while lots of land has been cleared, there are still private acres of blowdown. that plus lack of snow this winter will lead to a tinderbox situation.

HIndsight is always 20/20.

This smells to me like the stock market 'analysts' who can always explain exactly why the day's trading went the way it did but are mysteriously incapable of saying what's going to happen tomorrow.

Watch any financial program for a few days in a row and you'll see what I mean...

Here in Colorado, some of the ski resorts just aren't opening because of lack of snow. If the Rocky Mountains don't get enough snow this year, that's big trouble for all y'all at lower altitudes.
