The thing that impressed me most last night were Daniel Radcliffe's American accents. I kinda tuned this chick out.

2012-01-15 02:25:26 PM
The twitter critiques are all the more ironic, given the brutal Special Snowflake sketch from earlier in the episode.

2012-01-15 02:32:58 PM
Never heard of her. Is she really hot or is that picture all 'shopped up?

2012-01-15 02:37:05 PM
Don't watch SNL almost-ever, but I caught a Lana Del Rey video on MTV in the morning (song was called "Video Games" or something like that). Most boring, flat voice I've heard in a while, not sure why there would be buzz about her in the first place.

2012-01-15 02:40:31 PM
yeah I changed channels lastnight and didn't turn back. And what was up with super hyper Daniel Radcliffe? Is he hoping to be the next Doctor? He was bouncing off the walls.

Roook: And what was up with super hyper Daniel Radcliffe? Is he hoping to be the next Doctor? He was bouncing off the walls.

I just think that's his personality. Always struck me that way in interviews, at least.

And him as a version of the Doctor would be hilarious...but in a non-canon, Comic Relief sketch, maybe.

2012-01-15 02:50:08 PM
I like the video games song but she can't pull it off live. At least the second song was a little better.

Sexiest pic of her that I could find on a quick GIS. I've never heard of her. She's certainly attractive. Can't sing very well it seems. Oh well... it's Hollywood. She'll be used and abused until there's nothing left of her but a shell of the person she once was then she'll O.D. and/or commit suicide or something else equally tragic will happen. The beat goes on. Hollywood is a rancid cesspit.

2012-01-15 03:19:04 PM
I'd pork her.

/That "I dont know what an X is" meme is old and unfunny

2012-01-15 03:36:24 PM
it had an interesting, somewhat atonal quality. That said, it was grating, halting. Never heard anything non-live, is hers a studio-only voice, or does she genuinely just suck? She gets control of her entire range, though, and that's a voice that'll make every hair on your body stand up straight.

She's also not hard on the eyes.

2012-01-15 03:55:05 PM
Kate Bush did a way better job at this song 33 years ago.

Hey, but at least she'll be famous!

Yet, it's somehow relevant...

She is pretty attractive and never heard of her either. I do like how a has been ripped her on Twitter though. That was cool. I hope she does well enough to go back on and blow the doors off the place.

From Wiki:
"She is the daughter of domain investor and millionaire Rob Grant[7].[8][9] Grant's management chose her stage name, "

Basically, just another Upper East Side debutante who wants a "singing" career.
Her daddy is probably Lorne Michael's downstairs neighbor

PizzaJedi81: The thing that impressed me most last night were Daniel Radcliffe's American accents. I kinda tuned this chick out.

Agreed. I didn't much care for the episode generally, including Radcliffe's bits, but his accents were great precisely for being not noticeable. But, he just played foils for the regular SNL characters (like Target lady, who is getting a bit tired by now) and it just seemed to be saying "look I can play a boring forgettable American guy." The Hogwarts sketch was okay, but not over the top hilarious.

The musical guest just didn't do it for me. I can't judge whether she was bad or not, but I just don't like that sort of music I guess, it was just flat and slow, to me, so not something I'd bother looking up later.

Just overall a "meh" episode.

She sounds weird, much different from the single version of the song.

I did enjoy the "You Can Do Anything" sketch and some of the exit poll sketch at the end made me giggle.

But yeah. Meh.

My wife tuned in last night, and I was within earshot. We both agreed. Those were some of the most inane lyrics ever conceived.

2012-01-15 05:48:27 PM
Her first song sounded familiar. She often has been on the NPR hipster stations I podcast (89.3 The Current, KEXP, KCRW). It was a poorly sung performance on SNL compared to the recorded version.

2012-01-15 05:52:38 PM
Like so many "singers" today, she has next to zero breath control.

2012-01-15 05:56:59 PM
terrible lyrics and I don't know if she was terrible or if she just has a weird voice that i don't care for but the masses do. really breathy and sometimes sounds like a guy. She's pretty so there's that.

Yea, that meme was once funny but it took an arrow to the knee.

/also, didn't much get offended by the singer. Better than Lady Gaga.

2012-01-15 06:02:24 PM
I can't believe SNL is still on the air.

2012-01-15 06:07:11 PM
I didn't mind it.

She seemed nervous but the music sounded nice.

barefoot in the head: Like so many "singers" today, she has next to zero breath control.

Maybe some of us like a woman whos gasping for air. Ever consider that?

Reminded me of this.

She didn't strike me as much worse than the usual SNL musical guest.

2012-01-15 06:09:45 PM
1:04 in it isn't too bad.
sounds like a drag queen with a cold.

/what accent is that
"they say the world is buuuuilt ferr twooo"
"and bebe nowwhhh yuu duuu"

you say that like that's something new for fark.

Wasn't there a farker a few months ago who was touting her as "the next big thing"? Based on that idiotic song? I don't think so.

Lsherm: Wasn't there a farker a few months ago who was touting her as "the next big thing"? Based on that idiotic song? I don't think so.

meh, other than this headline, I don't know if I've ever even heard of her.

2012-01-15 06:14:09 PM
wait. what? this was a hit? it's an orchestral ballad with military snare drum. i'd be impressed if it hit the top 40 !!!

(wait.....i guess "tonight tonight" by S.P. was a mostly orchestral song too, and it was a hit. *shrugs*)

/i finally figured it out who she sounds like!
she sounds like a mid 70's Bryan Ferry (with his fake german/french singing accent), but Female!

2012-01-15 06:19:48 PM
Her voice was unremarkable, worse than some of the Miss America contestants I saw earlier last night (which may or may not be saying anything).

I was watching SNL with captioning on, and the things that strikes me about pop music these days is no one seems to know how to write lyrics anymore. They're just a bunch of disjointed, non sequitur phrases that make "MacArthur Park" look like Shakespeare.

2012-01-15 06:21:20 PM
Oh dear god. She sounds good on her CD, I think.

That was just awful. Drag queen with a cold for sure.

2012-01-15 06:22:44 PM
For some reason I find her really captivating, after this performance and seeing the video for the song only once. And I'm generally a pretty big music snob, for what it's worth. It might not be amazing on a technical level, but it's unique and has a very distinct vibe to it. Plus it definitely stands out in the current pop landscape.

maxwellton: Her voice was unremarkable

And her anus?

2012-01-15 06:24:18 PM
Her 1st album isn't out yet and she is on SNL !? That tells me all I need to know about whether or not I'm missing anything.

PizzaJedi81: The thing that impressed me most last night were Daniel Radcliffe's American accents.

He was doing "How to Succees in Business..." on Broadway, so he probably spent some serious time with a dialect coach.

2012-01-15 06:29:01 PM
She seemed somewhat flat. But I'd like more proof.

I wish there was a memorable SNL Hogwarts sketch. You'd think after all this time.

She should move away from the mic to breathe.

2012-01-15 06:30:38 PM
ok. just briefly reviewed some of her live clips on you tube. She is not a good singer.

Seriously? She's STILL doing that character?

This is why I roll my eyes when people talk about how funny and awesome Kristen Wiig is. I just don't see it. She reminds me of the worst aspects of MAD TV. It's as if Lorne decided they needed a Ms. Swan-type recurring character actor to just keep pounding the same act/catch phrase into the audience over and over so they can pick up the MAD TV fans who are were lost and didn't have anything to watch while they tried to figure out how to tie their shoes or button their shirts.

She's not funny. She's tedious. I think I'd almost rather watch Melanie Hutsell than Kristen Wiig. She's the reason I stopped watching SNL, and she's apparently not doing anything new in the two-or-so years since I stopped paying attention to the show.

I've seen episodes of "Hello Larry" that were more clever and funny than Kristen Wiig's lame-as-hell Target Lady skits.

You can be a music snob and still have awful taste in music.

As we see here.

I don't think the "Special Snowflake" skit was an accident.

2012-01-15 06:38:22 PM
I liked her better last year, when she was called Adele. Whenever you have a different breakthrough artist, all the other record companies start rushing out to find their own clone of that performer. Happened with Nirvana, Britney Spears, The Beatles, etc...

2012-01-15 06:38:33 PM
Ah the miracle of auto-tune in the studio, she should have lip-synched.

2012-01-15 06:38:50 PM
I don't know what a Del Ray is either, subby, but she seems to have surpassed Rebecca Black on the contempt meter...

2012-01-15 06:39:44 PM
She's not bad at all. A lot better than the usual pop crap. She'll get better at singing live obviously.

Hardly a debacle like Ashley Simpson.

That said, I liked her better about 15 years ago when she called herself Fiona Apple.

she doesn't need to sing anymore now that she signed a modelling contract
