No. It's actually been there the whole time. If anything it's gone down. It's like rape. If you check the hard numbers, there's a lot less rape these days than ever. (Same for all the violent crimes.) But if you check the news it seems like there's 1000% increase in it each year. Not so. We're just hearing about it.

Was a time when correspondence was precious and "news" meant something. I mean, who didn't grow up knowing Catholic priest jokes about them farkin' the altar boys? My grandpa used to tell them and he passed on nearly 5 years before the first actual case popped up in the news. And all the teacher-student relationships. I've met more than one couple who first met in the classroom like that. Many are STILL married.

So the hazing is one of those things you can see from a mile away and the potential damage is like nil 99% of the time but everyone wants that to be 100% so they freak out and push too hard, which never works, and the end result is everyone's unhappy and some poor schlub now has a jump rope up his butt instead of shaving cream in his face because the kids were never taught how to haze properly.

So I blame the people who are against hazing. Bans don't work.

If public shaming is what it takes to stop young men being brutalised by older and bigger gangs of men, then so be it. And if this is what it takes to motivate coaches to do their jobs and inculcate a culture of respect and sportsmanship in their charges, then so be it.

And I agree with Namatad. If the administrators of the games lived up to their names and booted a School out of their comps, or one of the big schools got hit hard by a civil suit (negligence of duty of care, etc etc), then you'd see a pretty big increase in the manner in which coaching staff promote a culture of respect rather than bastardry in their teams.

Initiation rituals and fun are important for team building, but there's a way to do it.

Never been a victim of hazing or bullying, but I've seen what it can do to young boys. And I've seen what can happen when boys are allowed to get away with it too.

Without going all cool story, bro.... I wrestled and swam, from middle school through college. I've never been, nor even seen hazing, on any team I've been on. In swimming it's pretty much solely about winning and training, in wrestling their was the added perk about dealing with the only men who will ever care about their weight in the same way women do.

Hazing is not normal. It happens because little sociopaths get involved in sports (or the army, or the police), or anything monolithic where someone can lord something over someone else. It needs to be stamped out wherever it's found, period, end of story. It detracts from one of the few things that makes this world a more fun and livable place, ie; Sports.

And anyone who says wrestling is gay clearly has never wrestled, and probably has never played any sport to speak of. Wrestling is exhaustive, you can get hurt if you don't know what you're doing, you can end another guys career for the same reason... it's one of the purest sports there is, but of all the things to go through someone's head when their wrist is hyper extended and they're using your own shoulder to drive your face into mat and flip you over to embarrass you in front of your peers and parents "Is this gay?" is not one of them.

Hazing is strictly voluntary.
Nobody is forcing anyone to be hazed in 99.999999% cases (the 0.000001% isn't hazing. It's rape/assault. There is a difference).

Basically, one needs to ask the following quesiton: Is the pain, risk, humiliation, and embarrassment really worth it to join a bunch of douchebags' exclusive little club?

When I was playing football and lacrosse, we had this black kid called Dominic (who played on both teams, like myself) who was a beast. In football, this guy's tackle annihilated people, and in lacrosse, it was like he was covered in grease (I remember him going right through the middle of two defence men who doubled down on him, without fouling. It was insane.)

But man, that guy did some farking weird stuff. One time on scout offense, one of the 2nd string guards was pulling and ear holed Dominic. He hit the ground, got up and went on with practice, but at the next practice, the 2nd string guard went to put on his helmet and discovered a nice fat turd sitting in it. Another time, he decided to wear nothing to practice save his girdle (which is not underwear, more like a rash-inducing pad holder) and his pants+pads. Guy's plants slipped on one play and with ass hanging out, he just kept on going.

Hazing served a purpose once. Back when there was only one way to be a man, and that involved unquestioning loyalty to the group of other men your age, anyone who had misgivings had to be taught just how shameful it was not to fall into line.
