Something I thought of earlier this morning. Why, after 10's of 1,000's of years of evolution, have otters not evolved knowing how to swim instinctively instead of having to be taught by their parents?

For the same reason after hundreds of thousands of years baby humans have to be taught how to walk by their parents: Mother nature can't genetically encode for everything.

Well, that and there's a genetic advantage to "learning" even skills that we consider pretty basic; if conditions change, the next generation can acquire the skills that the previous generation learned instead of having to overcome instinct in order to swim/walk differently.

True 'dat. Learned behaviors are far more adaptable than encoded behavoirs, thereby ensuring better chances of species survival.

When my daughter was about 6 years old she wanted me to steal the otters from the Ellen Trout Zoo in Lufkin.

Really I'm Black: we otter start using this meme instead of the ugly ass one.

The "ugly ass" bit is played out, much like Fark.

Plus, their bones are often purple (from eating sea urchins).

Even in death, they're pretty. Purple skeletons!

That is pretty amazing because an otters hoo-haw is so tight it's watertight.

Parents teach their kids to walk, huh? Pretty sure my kids figured it out all by themselves.

You sure about that? I have pictures of my Dad holding my hands as I take my first steps. At the very least, are you sure they did not think that they were supposed to be walking because they had been watching you for months? A horse comes out of its mother and almost immediately stands and walks. That's encoded behavior. Humans it takes months for them to figure it out.
