Oh come on, like people can't afford hats nowadays?
She's wasting her time when she could be cleaning out asbestos or mixing paint.

This message brought to you by the Pro Cancer Foundation (an equal opportunity offender).
The PCF reminds you that hats can't do anything, smoking makes you cool and that paint's not gonna mix itself.

Goooo cancer!

For the rest of you farkers who can't knit:

Become a potential marrow donor match (new window)

Platelet donations can help leukemia patients. It takes a little bit longer than blood donation but it is more important for certain patients and far fewer people do it (new window)

I'm registered as a marrow donor - my dad has some kind of immune system disease (currently no exact diagnosis, even though he's seen countless specialists) and may eventually need a bone marrow transplant - don't mean to threadjack but I'd be eternally grateful to any farkers who would also register. No pain, no $ out of your pocket - they mail you an envelope with some super-sized q tips, you swab the inside of your cheek, and throw the whole mess back in the mail box. You never know whos life you may be able to save.

And to the girl in TFA - keep it up hon, you may only reach a few people/patients, but they will appreciate your efforts more than you ever know. Seriously, thank you.

that's it - take the steps to register. The actual donation of marrow is a bit of an ordeal but it could mean the difference between life and death for someone and you can probably call dibs on their hot daughter or something.

Best of luck to you dad, man.

I just finished knitting a hat this evening, so I'm getting a kick (in the head) out of a girl who can do one per day. Either she's really fast, or I need a circular loom. But that's a really nice thing she's doing for those kids. One of my hats this Christmas season went to my mother in law, who starts chem again at the end of the month. Cancer sucks, but at least it's a reason to amass a cool collection of hats.

What about the donation process? What stops me from blood donation is that I have a rabid fear of needles (it's terrible.. granted, not as terrible as what some folks go through, but still). I've heard that marrow donation is a bit painful, but it's an entirely different kind of pain altogether.

I went to the site you recommended. I'm listed as an organ donor on my DL; this seemed like an equally worthy cause. Except the site kept asking for money. Do they want my bone marrow or not? They seem to want to charge me for donating, ffs.

Then I read this, among the many groups they don't want bone marrow donations from:

Men Who Have Sex with Men
Men who have had sex with other men within the past 5 years are currently not eligible to register as a potential volunteer donor. This is because men who have sex with men are, as a group, at increased risk for HIV.

I'd happily do a free swab test for bone marrow donation to see if I could potentially help someone. I'd donate said marrow if they paid my medical expenses. I certainly wouldn't begin to do so via the link you provided. I'm sure you meant well.

Katie got a tour of several common areas of the hospital but because of patient privacy and a rule that says visitors have to be at least 16, Katie didn't get to meet any of the children who got one of her hats.

Seriously? That's what our society has become, kids can't meet kids?

Have constantly hovered around the weight limit for blood donation, so as of this point, never donated :(
I am registered for marrow donation, hopefully if I'm a match I won't be too badly underweight :/
