Worse? Or better?

They're distant cousins. I hardly consider that to be incest.

"It turns out they share two things - they both are descendants from people who owned slaves"

Both decended from people who happened to own slaves and be the same people

How distant? FDR and Eleanor were 5th cousins.

2012-01-14 05:59:28 PM
Meh. I've got first cousins marrying in my family tree, and so do you. We're ALL `distant' cousins.

2012-01-14 06:02:09 PM
Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip are second cousins once removed (by descent from Christian IX of Denmark and Luise of Hesse-Kassel) and third cousins (by descent from Queen Victoria and Prince Albert).

Yeah, "distant cousins" needs to be clarified here; all humans are either immediate ancestors/descendants of or distant cousins to all other humans. We're "distant cousins" to chimpanzees, FFS. How "distant" is distant here?

If they are siblings, it's a story. If they're first cousins, it might be a story. Anything farther than that, it's not a story at all.

It's legal in some states to marry your first cousin. The increased chance of having farked up kids is minimal assuming it's not a consistent royal family kind of thing.

I personally still think it's gross and weird to marry your first cousin. Distant cousin? Big deal. It would be one thing if they grew up together and thought of each other as cousins, but they didn't.

The little town I grew up in had about 4-5 families that interbreeded with one another. One of my friends growing up managed to discover that he was his own eighth cousin.

He asked a Scottish driving instructor in Oban: "How do you keep the natives off the booze long enough to pass the test?"

Classic, you have to love that bastard.

I used to know this guy who was having a relationship with his stepsister. She was no blood relation to him whatsoever, but she used to have these guilt trips because she was sure they were committing some kind of incest.

Yeah, that's what I was getting at. I said "minimal" but "practically nonexistant" would have been a better way to describe it. At least that's based on an article I read. I don't pretend to actually know about shiat like that.

I wonder how much inbreeding goes on the the hood, with all the baby daddies running around and having as many kids as they can ignore. Distant cousins is nothing.

They didn't have any flipper babies, did they?

Meh. My mom found out that she is descended from one of Edward I's sons (same English king who subjugated the Scots during William "Freedom" Wallace's time). Then discovered my step father is descended from the other son.

My wife and I did family tree stuff and she and I have the same English ancestor from the 14th century, but we both did a mitochondrial DNA study and found we're related somewhere back in the 18th century in North Africa.

We were born on different continents five years apart to families whose horizons extend no further than the chips on their racist shoulders.

I'm Scottish, and would be forced to kill you, were it not for the fact that I'm an ancestor of him also. We're related to Charlemagne. That's a cool thing to tell the ladies. He was seven feet apparently, so somewhere my ancestors screwed a dwarf, cuz i'm 5'8".

nothing tops this guy:

Charles II of Spain, last of the Spanish Hapsburgs. His father was his mother's uncle, making her simultaneously his aunt and his grandmother somehow. He was effectively an invalid with a number of physical and intellectual disabilities, including an enlarged tongue that made him drool and speak with a severe impediment, and bouts of epilepsy and senility. He was likely sterile or impotent, and thus could produce no heir. His death sparked the War of the Spanish Succession.

Half the population of ireland, and much of the US, Scotland, and England, myself included, can all trace their ancestry back to one Irishman from many centuries ago. DNA tests are awesome.

That'd hardly be inbreeding. Most small town on the planet have couples way more closely related than that. Your children would hardly be web toed.

Yeah I knew that. The wild thing was her family came from Mexico. I was born in the States. So yeah somewhere along the continuum some member of a distant family went South of the Border and then after a few generations they came back up (legally) and moved into the same town I grew up in. That's what was freaky.

//Still wish I had gone out wioth her once, she was smiokin'.

////Extra points her cousin who was also an American from Omaha area was also living in the same town. That made him my cousin too, I forget how but the family memeber was of the same line....

Incest is mandatory in Nebraska. Even the state government is inbred.

The U.K. did this show a couple/few years back. David Tennant discovered his mothers family had been on the Orange side of the Irish Troubles and he was not comfortable with it.

They did one with Stephen Fry too. Haven't seen it though.
