I love the shiatheads in the comments, talking about how harsh the punishments should be, with one even advocating "removing them from their peer group" by transfering them to another school with permanent discipline records attached.

When all they did was get ahold of somebody's stupidly unprotected password, and "wipe off the chalkboard" in a more modern sense. So if say, thirty years ago, I had wiped off a chalkboard or taken down a posted photocopied message or changed a school sign without permission, and sent a few nasty letters to other students, I might have gotten detention or a two-day suspension, TOPS.

But because parents and administrators today are lazy, paranoid, entitled shiatheads, and there are so-called "stolen passwords" and computers involved, we need to freak out, call the police to consider pressing some bullshiat charges, and make a huge deal out of nothing, when the worst thing that happened might require 10 minutes to fix.

Personally, I would like to reward the two for pulling a good stunt without really damaging anything except the delicate sensibilities of worthless shiatheads. Well done!

Exactly. 'Stolen' passwords? Only if they socially engineered the teachers into giving them up, which is unlikely if they got them for 17 people. Far more likely is that the teachers are guilty of shiatty password protection. These kids did them a favour.

That or the school has a farked up system where EVERYBODY'S password is set to something like the first letter of their last name + ID number. That's how it is at the school where I teach.

I think some of them actually make it so you have to change it at certain intervals... which makes everyone write theirs down anyway. Still, it was an improvement on the system they had before. Really it was only a matter of time before we worked out that the login "administrator" was its own password.

I went to Lake Braddock and my math teacher was former playboy bunny, every couple of years someone would tape her centerfold to the projector screen, she would pull it down and good times would ensue. For some reason she never had a good sense of humor about it

Hey, back when I was in HS we used to thoroughly pwn the out of date school network daily. I forget the version of Novell that was running, but security was a joke. We used to have a contest to see who could make the most sysadmin confusing program in Qbasic. I received confirmation that my program to inject random line advances into the dot matrix printers AT ANOTHER SCHOOL worked as I hoped.

And yes, we had full access to grades, but those always went in last minute. And full access to loads of logins because the default password was the student ID. So we just needed an attendance sheet full of kids not in a computer class.

Oh, and we controlled the PBX system. Recording the controversial material off the principal's voice mail left us with some nifty blackmail material, if we ever needed to use it.

Ah, those were the days. Last hack I did was an Excel spreadsheet to build a control file for me.

Yup. Depending on the instructor, they may want APA. I have a (poorly cited, I guess) essay on why both citation styles are poorly conceived and should be replaced with something simple, like numbered end notes.

My position is that both styles focus more on the media than the material (this is particularly true for legal citations) and that the in-line citation method (Party, Rent, 2012) is incredibly annoying and breaks the flow of information from the page to the brain.

In short, fark AMA and MLA.

Well, I don't have room to judge anyone. I remember being an assistant manager in a retail store that required me to make daily bank deposits. I wrote the combination to the safe on the sole of my shoe.

Well at least the kids were nice enough to screw with enough people's accounts that it was obvious what was going on. If they had been real assholes they would have only used one teachers account to send the porn, then let him take the sole blame.

I don't believe I ever used Chicago style in college. APA I used a lot, MLA I only used during my Freshman year English classes, but that's it. I might have and don't remember it, but I was a business major, and I'm not thinking it was all that necessary.

I've found passwords written on the inside of administrators' desk drawers. In government offices.

They may have a policy of 'your passwords must be exactly 16 characters long and contain a number as the 3rd, 5th, and, 16th characters, a capital letter as the 2nd, 6th, and 12th characters, a lowercase letter for the 1st, 4th, 7th, and 10th characters, a symbol in the 8th, 11th, and 13th caracters, and a letter in the 1st and 14th characters. Oh, and your 5 passwords will all expire after 7 days, nonsimultaniously, and have different character requirements for each of the places. because the IT guy is the Rain man and thinks this is humanly possible to memorize.

Security has a definite Laffer Curve.

There's also a possibility of people sharing passwords. One place I worked at, everyone in the IT staff needed certain permissions - resetting other peoples password for example, but only 1 guy had the authority on the network to do that, and he only worked 4 hours every other day. So he just gave everyone his password instead of having to drive into work every six hours because someone was having a shiatfit because we weren't able to solve his problem.

We had a Data General system at our high school that we worked in Cobol on. One of the guys in class posted "Rich is a wee nee" to every terminal in the school system. Took about 15 minutes before our teacher was called down to the office via the intercom. About 10 minutes after that the real fun began.

The system was Blackboard... Anyone who has been subjected that POS content management system knows if it all got wiped clean, nothing was lost.

Pornographic e-mails via Blackboard.... surprising given many versions of Blackboard don't properly let you know when a document has completed uploading and don't allow you to view what was uploaded.

phpBB would be a better way to handle most educational content over Blackboard. Even with all the security holes, Blackboard has a great deal more.
