It was pretty obvious kids in her school would start threatening her. There were adults here on fark saying more or less the same. Not too surprising kids will follow that example.

Well that's completely expected and not at all surprising. This is about Christians being "oppressed" after all, of course they're going to abuse her. These are Christians after all.

Morality doesn't apply if you're Christian because all you have to do is believe and you'll get "forgiven".

Looks to me like they are acting all too 'Christian'. Now as to whether they are following the parts of the bible that are attributed to the teachings of Christ, well maybe not so much.

I live near this HS and the general population is REALLY showing their painful ignorance. On our local news last night they showed this young woman during her statement and it was well thought out and articulate, however the man on the street BS was VILE! Fark you Christians. Fark you.

SO MUCH THIS!!!! It's the same with Gays, blacks, women, teachers, Muslims, union workers - if these groups would just SHUT UP, mind their own damn business, and let the rest of us live our lives the way God intended, the world would be a better place. For us.

Hard to say since they're acting this way in the name of their God (and Jesus). Look at the comments telling the girl she is the one going to hell. They've twisted up their religion that badly.

much better than what I found on my own. many thanks!
Jessica Ahlquist, a student at the school and an atheist, filed a lawsuit against the school and the city of Cranston to remove the banner that has been hanging in the school for almost fifty years, saying that it violates the Establishment Clause of the Constitution's First Amendment by promoting one religion - in this case Christianity - over another
the kid was right - i'm all for free speech but geez...that's a frickin prayer scroll hammered into the gotdamn wall.

I think there might be a bit of 'STFU smart girl' at work there too. kid was pretty bright to catch on the establishment clause and then motivated enough to do something about it.

There has been a prayer banner painted on the wall of Cranston HS West since the Kennedy administration. A student, identifying herself as an atheist, asked for it to be removed or covered. The ACLU took the case and this week a judge agreed and demanded it be removed. The school has covered it but intends to appeal. BTW, the community is so far in the red it's ridiculous. There really are no resources to fight this and the city has to pay the ACLU's legal fees already.

How on EARTH can they claim something that says, at the top, "SCHOOL PRAYER" is a secular, non-religious banner? The middle text does, admittedly, pray for good things (though growing morally, in this context, is questionable to me) but it's clearly a prayer banner.
For those who were curious, the text is:
"Our Heavenly Father,
Grant us each day the desire to do our best,
To grow mentally and morally as well as physically,
To be kind and helpful to our classmates and teachers,
To be honest with ourselves as well as with others,
Help us to be good sports and smile when we lose as well as when we win,
Teach us the value of true friendship,
Help us always to conduct ourselves so as to bring credit to Cranston High School West.
Amen"
Anyway, judging from how people are acting, nobody was paying much attention to what the banner said, anyway. Least of all the Christians.

If you read the link, it would seem that the headline was sarcasm..
But Jessica Ahlquist was showered with Christian love. The people at /r/Christianity on reddit have denounced the Christian hatred shown towards her.
I thought it was pretty remarkable.
Here's the link to that.
A lot of times non-Christians chastise Christians for not speaking out when some Christian does something awful to people. Well, they're speaking out against it here.

first - take out an insurance policy on Jessica Ahlquist and her family.
then raise taxes, then make sure voters know the reason for the hike. indicate police coverage is going to be reduced and post the neighborhood rotation schedule a month in advance.

Possibly, but it's more likely just the normal kneejerk christian prosecution complex. These are the same people that get upset when someone says Happy holidays instead of Merry Christmas, that seriously think that 'under God' was always in the Pledge of Allegiance, and think that taking 'In God We Trust' off of the currency would bring about the downfall of the human race.

Reminds me of the time I was talking with a fine Pentecostal Christian who told me Jesus' "turn the other cheek" was a martial arts maneuver and that the New Testament was actually a coded combat manual, training Christians on how to beat the crap out of non-believers.

For what it's worth, I think you may have been having a conversation with an escaped mental patient that happened to identify as Pentecostal Christian.
I've read some crazy shiat in my life, but that might be the craziest.

Not just religions, any sort of ethos. How often do you hear about sports fans beating the crap out of a fan of a rival team?

Good point. Though I never understood being so rabid about something like a sports team, either, so I didn't even think of it that way.
I'm one of those people who can't think of anything abstract (like a sports team, school, home town, etc) that I could be remotely passionate about, never mind to the degree that I'd fight someone over it. I always make fun of people who say things like "we won!" regarding a sports team and ask them when they got signed to said team. *shrug*

And that's the problem. When people get rabidly loyal to the point of willing to harm others that don't see things their way, things get messy.
