Wait...what?

Atheists believe there are no gods. This girl didn't go to court over whether gods are real. So, what the hell are you talking about?

In case you're still having trouble figuring it out, she went to court over a government institution's violation of a constitutional promise.

Thank you for posting those comments. I have no reason to believe these are fake, or from some other "posting," and based on what you have provided I would hope there are dozens of students who are both suspended and where the law will allow, prosecuted for these outrageous threats and taunts.

While I do believe Jessica was wrong to biatch about the banner, she, nor anyone else deserves to be treated this way, or be subject to such threats.

Fade2black: AmorousRedDragon: Fade2black: Atheists pushing their agenda on Christians. Christians pushing their agenda on non-believers.

That is not what is happening. Atheists do not have an agenda. The atheist you are referring to was simply stopping Christians from pushing their agenda on her. I am sorry you do not see this.

Your agenda is essentially to wipe any and all religion (except Islam, you have to be PC after all) from existence; as long as it imposes on your life. Most others manage to ignore it or turn the other way to move on. Atheists enjoy pointing out Christian hypocrisy while ignoring their own.

If you simply ignored it (because I seriously doubt religion is being FORCED on you) I'm sure you'd find most of the time, you're no worse off for wear.

Keep tootin' that horn though. Maybe someday it'll work out for you.

Welcome to /ignore, dipshiat. It's clear to me that you have nothing of value to say, and I will not trouble myself to look at your drivel further.

wookiemonster: This is really a first world issue. Most of the world either doesn't have freedom of religion or speech, or separation of church and state.

It would be interesting to see the atheist girl try this in Europe at a Muslim school, or otherwise try this same thing with anything to do with Islam. Well, we know what would happen, as it happens every day to women in Islam.

[www.faithfreedom.org image 335x189]

If the girl felt "excluded" because of a banner (REALLY, a banner?), did she honestly think that she'd get more friends by taking the matter to FEDERAL COURT and putting the school on the five o'clock news?

Yes, the reactions to this were anti-Christian, that's for certain, but can we please stop pretending that Atheists aren't attention whore a-holes who let Atheism become their religion. Shouldn't atheists not give a shiat about such things, thus ensuring their imagined superiority over the rest of the believers?

You are an imbecile. Goodbye.

The chick is just standing up for what she believes is right. The school is in the wrong. Sure, she's an atheist, and I bet if she weren't she wouldn't care. That's what I'd like to say, but if she were a Muslim, Hindu, Jewish, anything other than Christians I wonder if she'd still suffer the same backlash? I personally wouldn't want an illegal and unconstitutional banner I didn't believe in hanging in my school auditorium. It doesn't matter what she believes or doesn't believe in. Wrong is wrong. The Holy Rollers in the school are just making themselves look bad. Good for her for standing up for what is right. Does the banner hurt anything? Of course not, but that isn't the point. People should be allowed to go to school without having religion thrown in their face. It's their basic right as a human being.

Atheism is an absurd belief system which flies in the face of logic.

The decoding of the human genome proves the existence of a grand designer. Let that sink in for a second. God's signature is writ large in our genes. What do I have to support this outrageous thesis? Simply this: It has long been scientific orthodoxy that evolution is blind and random. In other words there is no "telos" no purpose in evolution just random mutation and selection by survival. By the logic of Richard Dawkins and the "New Atheist" movement there can be no foresight, no advance planning without a creator. So let's take their argument and turn it on its head.

In the last five years it has become clear that the Darwinian model of random mutation and selection by survival over long periods of time is only part of the picture.

What was previously thought to be junk DNA (98.5% of the human genome) is now known to be genetic switches and genetic modules. These are genes which are fully functional barring only being turned on. We have seen in several cases that these switches respond to external forces. A moth will turn from white to black in a sooty environment. Not gradually over thousands of generations but suddenly one or two generations. We can even turn these switches on in the lab. Thus, we have a repository of genetic forms which are held in reserve until needed. This is advance preparation. This requires a designer. The "watchmaker" is no longer blind.

If you believe in anything supernatural in 2012, no matter how "mainstream", you are an idiot. You should be supplied only with pureed foods, a helmet-compatible safety spoon, and an XL diaper. If you go around insulting people (read: atheists) more intelligent than you, all you have accomplished is to engrave your idiocy in the historical record. Enjoy sputtering on your deathbed about a Disneyworld-in-the-sky that does not exist while everyone with a functioning brain exists outside your little world of fear and guilt. Or, you know, console yourself by coonting it up on Facebook, where your invisible wizard apparently cannot read your blather.

GroverCleveland: come over to agnosticism sweetie

we'll (probably) treat you ok (sometimes)

She might already be agnostic.

Agnosticism is about knowledge (that is, whether it's possible or impossible to know with reliability about the truth or falsity of a particular claim).

Atheism is about belief (specifically, that one does not believe in the existence of gods).

Unfortunately, people have gotten sloppy (including some dictionaries) and started thinking of agnosticism as some middle ground between believing "X" and believing "not X.*"

Atheism does not require anyone to have an affirmative belief that there are no gods. It just requires the absence of an affirmative belief that gods exist.

1. Blue laws
2. Anti-sodomy laws
3. Anti-gay marriage laws (in most states)
4. Subsidy of churches (exemption to most taxes, tithes tax-deductible, "faith-based initiatives")
5. Christian slogans in the Pledge, on currency and in government proceedings
6. Exemptions to anti-discrimination laws in unemployment

What Christians are currently TRYING to force on people:

1. Anti-gay marriage laws (nationwide)
2. Prayer in schools
3. Teaching Christian doctrine as fact in science classes
4. Blocking teaching of science in science classes
5. Blocking all forms of abortion
6. Blocking all forms of birth control (and forcing abstinence-only sex education)
7. Placing monuments and the 10 commandments in government buildings

What atheists are currently TRYING to force on Christians:

1. Keep the government secular.
2. There is no number 2.

Because People in power are Stupid: My friend had this bumper sticker on his car:
[www.evolvefish.com image 150x157]

The car was frequently vandalized and the sticker was often peeled off.

Morality doesn't apply if you're Christian because all you have to do is believe and you'll get "forgiven".

Actually, in that case, they believe there is nothing for their god to forgive. They are defending god by removing an anti-god sticker. They are fighting the good fight against god's enemies. God comes first. And they're in the right. So, it's not a sin to deface your friend's car. It's a virtuous act.

Seriously - people like that can't even conceive that there might be a belief system other than theirs that could possibly be acceptable. And it's not just the obvious nut cases - all kinds of people, whom you'd never expect, are that inflexible. It's actually kind of scary.

Antedeus: A moth will turn from white to black in a sooty environment. Not gradually over thousands of generations but suddenly one or two generations.

On the off-chance you aren't trolling or that someone's reading and thinking "Whoa, this guy has a point": Insects adapt very quickly because they reproduce fast and everything eats them. Birds, in particular, eat moths and have excellent vision, so the moths that don't fit in are quickly eaten. The black moths existed but were being eaten before. Once the environment changed, it was the white moths who were easier to find and eat. Doesn't mean there's a god looking out for moths.

The "But it's only a vocal minority" argument doesn't really hold water here. The vast, vast, vast majority of Christians commenting on this online are negative, so far as I've seen.

A moth's color mutates to one that allows it to camouflage itself better in its given environment and all of a sudden God hit the switch? What? DNA is billions of years old, Phenotypes can emerge that were once suppressed. What the hell does the "Creator" have to do with it?

Meisaims: Did anyone else go to high school? People acted like this REGARDLESS of what you did.

But many Christians argues that just being Christian makes you a fundamentally better person than not being Christian. Full of grace and forgiveness and love.

If that were true, then Christian high schoolers would act better than that. At this stage most of them have had 12-16 years of having Christianity beaten (sometimes literally) into them. You'd think that amount of Christianising would mean the 'better person' effect would have kicked in at least a little.

They don't, of course, because they're bullies who just use their so-called religion as a rod to smite others with and a curtain to hide behind, and will continue to do so as adults.

What, do you think when these kids are 40 they're going to have stopped calling for violence against those who don't bow deeply enough to their god?
