It's not 1745 if the pirates weren't forced to become crew on the Royal Navy ship.

It's called the poop deck, Lois. That is why I pooped there.

In 1745 they probably would have caught more.

In 1745 they would have been summarily hanged from the mainmast.

/Seems like a better strategy actually.

Yes. The nice thing about modern piracy, with RPGs you din't need to worry about a hull big or sturdy enough for mounted cannon.

But real pirates have always prefered small and fast ships. Frigates like The Black Pearl were rare.

If anyone gave a damn to try to find any underlying causes of the significant rise of incidents of piracy off the coast of Somalia, they might find this (new window)

Waste dumping
See also: Radioactive waste dumping by the 'Ndrangheta

Following the Indian Ocean tsunami of December 2004, there have emerged allegations that after the outbreak of the Somali Civil War in late 1991, Somalia's long, remote shoreline was used as a dump site for the disposal of toxic waste. The huge waves which battered northern Somalia after the tsunami are believed to have stirred up tonnes of nuclear and toxic waste that was illegally dumped in Somali waters by several European firms - front companies created by the Italian mafia.

Europe destroyed their sole source of economic well being.

Yay us

Funny you left out this part:

The European Green Party followed up these revelations by presenting before the press and the European Parliament in Strasbourg copies of contracts signed by two European companies-the Italian Swiss firm, Achair Partners, and an Italian waste broker, Progresso-and representatives of the warlords then in power, to accept 10 million tonnes of toxic waste in exchange for $80 million (then about £60 million).

So basically a couple of criminal organizations in Europe contracted with the powers that were in Somalia at the time so Somalia destroyed their sole source of economic well being.

Also, Progresso? Don't they sell spaghetti sauce here?

Every time you see sombody taking credit for catching these guys, it looks to me like they give up soon as your boat starts head toward them. It looks harder to catch a fish than a pirate. Oh well, given a purple heart for their efforts.

Somalia?
RTFA
Yep.

Somalia is the ultimate end of the Libertarian ideology. The absence of government means the strong dominate the weak. Eventually you wind back to feudalism wherein people bow down to warlords. There's no central power to enforce a rule of law.

The Libertarian position fails at that point, although a touch of libertarian perspective helps to keep the size of government to a useful size.

/little l versus Big L Libertarianism

Show the pirates the same humanity they seem to not show to everyone else.

Actually walking the plank has always seemed a little soft to me. Whats the point? If you want to drown someone why not just throw them over the side with weights attached, why make them walk down a wooden plank and jump into the sea.
I think a better, and infinitely more painful method of drowning someone would be this:

You can't hang someone from the mast you geometrically challenged freak. Masts are vertical.

You hang pirates from the yardarm.
