(Some Fight Card) Spiffy UFC 142 discussion thread. Can Chad Mendes steal the Featherweight title from José Aldo? Unlikely, but this sure beats Strikeforce or watching Timmmmaaaay get T-boned. Fights start at 7pm ET   (ufc.com) divider line 485

I saw an article about the relative lack of advertising to support this event, and now it dawns on me that Dana knew he was going to head to head with the NFL playoffs & figured it wasn't worth the money. I tend to agree with him.

Hopefully Pittsburgh blows out Denver early and I can watch the fights uninterrupted.

Now the link says facebook fights at 7:30. They can't really nail the prelim times down very well. Oh well.

I made one too (and I am "following" you on that site)

I made it a few nights ago and I meant to update it but I have been too busy, I know a few of them are pretty far off.

I'll be watching this for free on Xbox live's new UFC app. They were going to show UFC 141(Overeem v. Lesnar) on Xbox, as their debut fight on Xbox, and it was free, but the app crashed, so they gave everybody who had a 'seat' for 141, this one for free.

I'll have a totally not legal backup stream in case it crashes

So are there facebook only prelims, or are they all on FX?

You can't beat Aldo, he's not human. Also did Johnson really weigh in at 197 on Friday or was that a screw up by the commissioner?

Dude usually fights at 170. Has missed weight there a number of times too. He should be barred from welterweight.

Facebook starts at 7:30 ET, FX at 8 PM. So there's probably only one Facebook-only prelim.

So what happened to the ppv fights starting earlier? Did that whole concept get scrapped?

If I wanted to watch sweaty guys punch each other in the groin for an hour, I'd watch Graham Norton.

/oh wait...

I think they are trying to work around the NFL playoffs, just think about the people in Rio who bought seats, it is 10 pm there now.

You haven't seen Aldo's last couple fights, have you?

And Johnson did indeed weigh in waaayyy over weight. He walks around at 210-ish and had cut a bunch, but the he lost feeling in his legs because of the cut in weight, which scared the crap out of him and a doctor advised him to hydrate stat.

I guess, technically, you were right either way. You said "you" can't beat him...and "I" can't. You also said he isn't human--which I realize is a figure of speech--but he sure as hell looked human in the 5th round against Mark Hominick and even against Manny Gamburyan in the first round IIRC.

The stories I've been reading had Johnson cutting weight to 1.5 over and the doctor's told him to stop and rehydrate. Come weigh-ins he was back up to 197. 20% of his purse is to Vitor and White said Johnson's job is on the line. Vitor also stipulated he had to weigh in again today below 205 which he did. Two weigh ins and home field advantage makes it easier and easier to call Vitor winning.

2012-01-14 07:19:00 PM
...but he did destroy Ken Flo, though he didn't finish him.

The string of wins Aldo has put together is EXTREMELY impressive considering the guys he was fighting. Chad Mendez is a tough dude, but is he going to be able to do what his teammate Uriah Faber wasn't? Seems hard to believe, but hey Johnny Hendricks knocked Fitch the fark out at the last ppv.

I think the opposite. Johnson has had more time to put the weight back on and recover. The other thing is Belfort is really hard to gauge because he doesn't fight very often, just twice in the last 2+ years. I know he had an injury; but since then he's 1-1 (loss to Anderson and the KO vs. Akiyama). I think Johnson is much more dangerous than Akiyama and possibly more dangerous than Silva as far as strength/power.

Yeah but Hendrick's has the KO power that Mendes doesn't even come close to having.

Mendes is younger than Faber and probably a better fit for the weight class. They say he's the best wrestler in the weight class. He's never demonstrated the striking game Urijah has; but I think he could grind out a W, since Aldo's "weakness" is wrestling. Of course, he dominated Urijah on the ground...

Correct, I'm just saying I (and many others) have been extremely wrong/surprised before.

Oh he definitely has at least one round per fight where he just stops entirely(likely to catch up with him in a few years), but it just seems damn near impossible to finish the guy. Even when Hominick was teeing off on him he never landed more than a few punches before Aldo regained wrist control. He also did a great job of preventing Hominick from posturing up. He a lot like Frankie Edgars, one bad round amongst utter domination.

I've only ever bet when at a live event and have done well. Picked Mir over Nog in their first fight and made out. On PPV, I seem to have around 40% accuracy.

If Mendes can survive the early onslaught, I see him taking it to Aldo in the later rounds. Actually I'm hedging - my gut feeling is that Mendes is going to walk right through him (yes, I know - it's crazy).

If I'm wrong it'll probably be by a lot, but that's how I see it.
