He could be a lot more decisive. Of course, if he came out against it, every member of the GOP would automatically be for it, so maybe it's good he's waffling.

Maybe I'm having reading issues today, but I didn't get subby's headline in the least from the White House statement. In fact, that's a reasonably positive article about SOPA from my perspective. Yes, they'll probably do something ham-fisted and extreme at some point, but what parts of that story suggest that the President is pro-SOPA, other than the fact that the statement identifies foreign piracy as A Bad Thing?

The ISP provision in SOPA allows the U.S. Department of Justice to seek court orders requiring service providers to block subscriber access to foreign sites accused by the DOJ of copyright infringement. That provision would be removed, but remaining in the bill would be provisions allowing the DOJ to seek court orders requiring search engines to remove links to sites accused of infringement and requiring online advertising networks and payment processors to stop doing business with the accused sites.

I'm actually okay with that. That's easy to get around. Look for more pirate search engines popping up in other countries without such law.

2012-01-14 01:12:38 PM
Well that sounds exactly like his comments on the NDAA, and look how that turned out? Nothing changed and a worthless comment made on the bill that has no effect but made a few people feel better.

make me some tea: I'm actually okay with that. That's easy to get around. Look for more pirate search engines popping up in other countries without such law.

I'm not. It'd be a tad better if it said "found guilty of infringement", but I don't like the idea of Digg accusing Fark of infringing copyright (or Viacom accusing YouTube, as happened before they were smacked down in court), and Fark getting all its ad money and PayPal support pulled, as well as Google not being allowed to link to it. The MPAA/RIAA aren't particularly gun-shy when it comes to accusing sites of piracy.

Arent there better ways to stop piracy? Like diplomacy with foreign countries and trade sanctions and stuff?

SOPA was created by an anti-choice anti-weed Texas Republican. Corporate whores are in both parties.

I can see even that part of it as ultimately legislation destined to fail, but at least it requires review by a court to enforce.

Actually a lot of prominent Democrats are pushing for SOPA/PIPA, and a number of Tea Partiers are against it. Here's an easy way to follow the money. Check out Harry Reid's bag of loot he got from the entertainment industry. Link (new window)

well, actually you can't ever stop 'piracy', but the industry could significantly reduce its effects and negative impact by changing their business model(s) and keeping pace with new technologies and distribution methods.

which RIAA and the MPAA will never do, because f*ck you, that's why.

SOPA/PIPA isn't being discussed on the news much (if at all), it's actually been more interesting to watch the news blackout than it would have been to see a discussion on the legislation by the 'meet the press' crowd.

that said - I think the bill will pass on some form or other. the less palatable bits will probably get taken out and then quietly slipped into random legislation over the next two years.

and while we're on the subject of copyright infringement...why the hell is/was the Dept of homeland security involved in shutting down bit torrent tracker sites earlier last year? homeland security and RIAA? WTF man. seriously.

Indeed, Netflix practically eliminated my desire to go out and find questionable torrents of various movies and TV shows. They made it cost effective and simple to get a hold of content.

Same with music. Used to download a lot through Limewire and such, but between YouTube, Grooveshark, and free legal downloads, I don't do much of any music pirating. Naturally, the copyright cops hate all three and want them to die a fiery death.

Hulu and Netflix replaced my cable and TV/Movie torrenting while Google Music replaced my music torrenting.

yup. the brick and mortar store distribution method is what RIAA wants to maintain...but between itunes, nexflix, and steam (for games and whatnot) we don't NEED a store, we just need a fast and reliable net connection.

I really think that half the reason RIAA and the MPAA are screaming bloody murder over piracy is because 1. they have a weird control fetish when it comes to content and 2. they can't screw over their customers as easily with newer technologies (downloads are always going to be cheaper).

mostly tho - I think this is about money. they can fudge the numbers on physical inventory and cook the books easier than they can with download copies of their material.

Well, you see...when a politician and a lobbyist love each other very much, sometimes they lie very close together and the lobbyist inserts his money into the politician. Then later when the politician goes to the bathroom, an unholy union of completely unchecked police power and corporate greed pops out. And that's how what you described is made.

Pretty good actually as just ended up being an empty gesture reaffirming powers already granted under the AUMF -- in other words nothing new.
