THIS.

And, of course, slave labor (in fact, real slave labor, like prison labor or "mandatory restitution") is fine for private companies and we certainly can't do things like require a living wage. But internships at the government? COMMUNIST NAZI SOCIALISM

A Dark Evil Omen: Well, some of us in the "middle" have been trying to get people to organize, but it's hard.

And your characterization of both "blue collar schmucks" and how terribly, terribly hard "professionals" have it is just completely ignorant.

Sorry, I work in construction these days, where I see the first two on a regular basis and am the third...you?

Well, I work around "blue collar schmucks" all the time (the vast majority of whom do not have union representation) in my volunteer work, and my day job is as a software developer where I am the "middle" and work with "professionals" every single day.

WhyteRaven74: More time goes by the more I believe unpaid internships need to be made illegal. You want someone to work for you? Pay them.

I don't think you understand how this generally works. Unpaid interns, especially in an office setting, are generally not doing much actual work-- if they weren't around, the regular employees would be doing the few things interns do. Mostly they get to watch and learn-- it's like free on-the-job training. In two of my several careers, as a potter and as a boatbuilder, I've had unpaid interns, who actually did work hard, but were grateful for the opportunity to learn stuff that they hadn't learned in college-- how to design a glaze, how to bed a fitting, etc. When they were done learning, they went out and opened their own shops.

As a Job Creator, I should have more money. Wait, I only produced useful stuff, like pottery and sailboats, unlike Mitt and friends, whose work products are money and misery.

Because anyone who expresses the conservative point of view MUST be a troll. To the liberal mind, it simply isn't possible that anyone sincerely opposes their efforts to force "goodwill" upon society.

Forced volunteerism and voluntary slavery are two social evils of our time. People genuinely believe that, and devote significant efforts to oppose these forms of altruistic evil.

Lawnchair: So, basically Dan Quayle's 'JTPA' jobs-training proposal again. Like PPACA, the Obama administration is taking the slightly-better-than-nothing Republican half-measures of the 80s and 90s and re-introducing them to seething right-wing rage.

I'm pretty much coming to the conclusion that the entire purpose of Obama's presidency is to make the Republican leadership constantly flip out over their own alternative policy suggestions, showing that they never were serious in the first place. I mean, we actually have a former Speaker of the house who put forward the core of Obamacare as the reasonable alternative attacking the Republican governor who actually had to implement it.

Obama is one hell of a funny president for anyone with a political memory longer than 6 months.

Fox was recently sued for using unpaid internships (new window)

They also don't note that Republican South Carolina is going to force unemployed people to volunteer. (new window). They even want them to be able to do work that should be paid work for free (specifically they mention electrical work). Add to the massive pay cuts, furloughs and other local government cuts in GOP dominated states, it's the GOP that wants a slave workforce.

No, they are not happy. They exist in a place between desperation, rage and depression. They have not made great life choices, they grew up believing they would live out their lives as they saw "the greatest generation" do during "the golden ages" and their life sucks. They have to blame someone because they have been taught that if the tried and believed hard enough they would get whatever they wanted, so it's clearly not their own fault. Consequently it must be *their* fault. Throw in a news station and political party that breeds hatred and division and it's not hard to see why people are constantly in a frothy, stupid, constant rage.

Guntram Shatterhand: I used to think that Fox News had a leg up on anybody they would attack: they have a 24/7 operation that is built to push a narrative that simply doesn't exist in reality, and the news organization to repeat it enough so any stupid viewer will simply take it as fact.

Then I realized that they have a 24/7 operation to fill. They're much more dire than a news operation because everything they push has to be written, thought about, and filtered. And it doesn't always work (remember how 'socialism' was a bad thing as opposed to opening up a discourse about capitalism?) and it's at times futile due to Republican actions. So this must be Obama's plan: give Fox nothing to run on, and let them fall victim to their own delusions and madness while going further down the rabbit hole. It's hard to make fun of someone who simply doesn't play the game, and Obama is playing the Republicans by not sinking to their level. And they're so rabid about taking down the Black President that they don't really see how badly they look.

which is why they will utterly fail come election time. There is simply not enough crazy or stupid people to support the delusions by a majority vote.

BillCo: DOOCY: Fast forward to today. There aren't that many jobs out right now. And in fact, apparently the way the administration is going to entice the young people to vote for them again is they are going to have a summer jobs program. They are saying that private business is going to ante up something like 180,000 jobs, which, when you look at the economy, is not that many but apparently only about 30 some percent of those jobs you can actually get a paycheck. The rest of them are unpaid internships.

No one has a problem with young people getting jobs, it's the administration's atempt to manufacture good numbers for political gain.

You can take the Obama out of Chicago, but you can't take the Chicago out of Obama.

Alright...sigh, it has come to this. Time to vent some equal opportunity political hatred.

At this point, can we please just pass a law on a bipartisan basis so that these blatantly obvious kickbacks to campaign contributors don't require the expensive subterfuge of some "business". It would at least be more transparent corruption, lol. I don't give a flying fark if this for the green energy farce that still doesn't make sense with demand and supply side subsidies or the war profiteering military contractors and mercenaries. Both parties are hopelessly corrupted by these practices...to say one is more than another at this point makes you out to be a disingenuous, hopelessly and irrationally bent toolshed.

My joking solution: If you are a campaign donator, then the winner of the presidential election will have the treasury send you check directly for your "investment" with some interest say 20%. That would cost us less then these thinly veiled economic abortions. Still, that probably wouldn't fly because many of these politically connected corporatist shysters and reprobates make out with ridiculously high rates of return compared to that in the end.

Teenagers working limited three-month internships for experience isn't the same thing as nine-year-olds doing heavy janitorial labor for slave wages for an entire year to save the district money.
