If the Obama team were smart, they suggest the President talk as much football as he can for the next few months, as well as expressing his love of apple pie and baseball. Just to watch Fox suddenly discover the German/foreign roots of the pastry and its hidden agenda of ebbil, as well as the Muslimy nature of football and baseball.

Unpaid internships = another name for voluntary slavery

/when the government is broke, they have to rely on slave labor

DOOCY: Fast forward to today. There aren't that many jobs out right now. And in fact, apparently the way the administration is going to entice the young people to vote for them again is they are going to have a summer jobs program. They are saying that private business is going to ante up something like 180,000 jobs, which, when you look at the economy, is not that many but apparently only about 30 some percent of those jobs you can actually get a paycheck. The rest of them are unpaid internships.

No one has a problem with young people getting jobs, it's the administration's atempt to manufacture good numbers for political gain.

You can take the Obama out of Chicago, but you can't take the Chicago out of Obama.

First of all, nobody takes Steve Doocy seriously.

Second of all, lots of people start out as interns or summer temps and the go on to have "real jobs" in the same field.

yeah but unlike when the GOP have their political theatrics and read select portions of the constitution or push bills that enshrine "under God" in the pledge of Allegiance or "In God we trust" on our money this actually helps people. The only thing the GOP has done is destroy jobs in hopes of making Obama look bad. Even to the point of forcing a downgrade of our credit because they wouldn't budge on the debt ceiling.

EnviroDude has apparently not heard about Congressional interns.

I guess they only count when they are getting involved with married or supposedly straight Congresscritters...

even Fox News has interns.
and the use of interns saves you tax dollars.
and last week Fox supported cheap child labor when it was Gingrich's idea and the job was cleaning toilets.

Just goes to show what a bunch of trolls they are.

CSB: I was an intern for a Republican Congressman who was on the commitee that investigated the Waco fiasco. So along with answering phones and ordering lunch, I also got to read, summarize and report on that investigation.

So me, a lowly unpaid intern, worked in the House office buildings in DC, walked through the underground tunnels to the Capitol, and got to work scarily closely with some very important people.

And last week FARK excoriated Gingrinch for even suggesting we look at such a plan. I'm sure there's some level of contortion that will allow you guys to claim this is somehow different.

Wait.. what? Seriously? This is a bad thing now?

Of course it is. It's easier to hate the everloving fark out of something or someone you don't agree with than it is to offer a practical solution to whatever you don't like. Especially when you don't have the first idea how to solve the problem because you're just as much a part of it as your opposition.

\same goes for you, Occupiers... get out of the tent phase and start doing something about what you don't like.

Sure, Congressional internships aren't backbreaking manual jobs that teenagers would replace adult employees in. Slight difference.

Sure, but learning a valuable skill like cleaning toilets can really pay off when you're next in line for that lucrative Janitorial Engineering position.

Gingrich only proposed that for poor kids. Rich kids get internships in law firms or government, poor kids get internships mopping floors in the cafeteria.

More time goes by the more I believe unpaid internships need to be made illegal. You want someone to work for you? Pay them.

2012-01-14 10:08:58 AM

I'm wondering what the deal is with the robotrolls. Is is paid work, or something like an internship? After posting a couple of weak-sauce talking-point sentences, do they have a form where they keep track of what they said and submit it to their minders every week or so? Is it a contest sort of thing, where the sock puppet with the most comments gets to go and meet one of the Fox News bubbleblondes? Or do you get points to turn in for troll doll prizes? It's just interesting to me, that's all.

Oh, and the press release clearly indicates that the positions are paid. The phrase "paid jobs and internships" should make it clear, but if you really need the distributive property applied:

paid (jobs and internships) = (paid)jobs + (paid)internships

Paid summer jobs and internships that comply with the current Child Labor laws.
vs
Janitorial service for the school, that BY GINGRICH'S OWN WORDS would replace full time workers, and would involve children so young, or hours so long, that Federal laws regarding child labor would need (again, by Gingrich's own words) to be changed.

So yes, this is somewhat different. I'm glad you were able to pick up on it. You're getting smarrrrter (ruffles hair).

Well, technically they are a volunteer.

Most politicians at least actually dont have any money to pay people. They have a chief of staff and an office manager who get paid, the rest are consultants or whatever. I think congressmen and senators get a set amount that they can pay towards their staff. Most staff actually work towards the election campaign, there are rules as to who can do what and campaign workers cant really work on legislative stuff. I think, i could be wrong

vernonFL: Most staff actually work towards the election campaign

Yep, I have a friend who's involved in all that. The rather sad part is that working in a Congressional office has become little more than resume padding for many people. They don't even particularly care about any issues, they just want it on their resumes.

When I was an intern answering phones at the Congressmans office, at first I was genuinly interested in helping constituents.

It turned out, half the phone calls were from people who wanted the US out of the UN, and the other half were from people who wanted a pothole fixed.

Because one of these happened. And the other is stupid bullshiat.

So, basically Dan Quayle's 'JTPA' jobs-training proposal again. Like PPACA, the Obama administration is taking the slightly-better-than-nothing Republican half-measures of the 80s and 90s and re-introducing them to seething right-wing rage.

I have an intern and I can't recommend them enough. He's a go-getter from NYU and he's getting real world corporate experience. My company was a mess. My intern, Darren, has really helped me keep track of my activities and arrange appointments, even with my friends. My company is currently testing an oil tanker bladder that will put an end to maritime oil spills. We're also looking at an innovative method of packaging ketchup and mustard in the same bottle and a pizza parlor where you make your own pies.

Counting unpaid internships to make the numbers look good. Story straight ahead
Doocy even claimed that the program is the administration's attempt to "entice the young people to vote for them again

Is he trying to say that Obama is trying to bride people to vote for him by not getting them a paycheck? I knew Doocy wasn't the brightest bulb at fox, but damn, that's dumb even for him.
