(ESPN)   Can Tebow's pony friendship magic take the Broncos past the Patriots? Will the Saints prove that the 49ers aren't yet a championship-caliber team? It's The NFL Divisionals Day 1 thread, games at 4:30 PM on Fox and 8 PM on CBS   (scores.espn.go.com) divider line 3073

Hai guise what's going on in this thread?

I'm pet-sitting again this week, so I'll be in and out, with a slow internet connection for at least part of the afternoon/evening, but I'm going to try and keep up with y'all anyway. :D

*reads after-zeroth-and-before-second comment, waggles eyebrows* Hey Harv, as far as I'm concerned you're always...

some.old.lady.: Harv72b: In just in case this is the green thread, because I always wanted to be the cool guy at the top.

Sargun: It really wasn't until this season that I've felt the hate that comes with success. Through the Super Bowl year we were pretty much still the loveable underdog despite Breesus and co., but now that we've won it all and keep winning there's so much hate around.

And I'm enjoying it. Now I know what Patriots fans feel like, except without the "being a massive douche" part! : D

I haven't noticed any Saints *hate* really? They've just been ignored moreso than they diserve. But I have no problem with that.

A Word-of-God spouting guy who lacks fundamentals and has an over inflated value as to his place within the higher scheme of things?

I'd say Tebow is the perfect representative of America already.

PATRIOTS NAY

49ers & Broncos win today!

/much rather have Saints win. Worst Super Bowl ever would be 49ers Texans

I have to agree... I really haven't seen people do much but respect the team for playing well and then ignoring them... I haven't seen the hate.

2012-01-14 03:57:35 PM

downstairs: That's funny. That's exactly how me and my friend in HS picked the Buccaneers as our favorite football team. We were both losers, so we figured we'd root for losers.

Now that they're in the same division as the Saints, can't root for them any more.

I was already a Raiders fan at the time and still am. So far that hasnt been a problem. They've never both been very good in the same year. If they ever were both in the same Super Bowl my head would asplode. I couldnt watch.

2012-01-14 03:57:58 PM

downstairs: InferiousX: The Patriots, as good as Brady is, are a paper tiger this year. Their secondary is atrocious. And if you count only the regular season, the Patriots didn't beat a single team with a winning record this season.

That's the schedule's fault, not theirs. I can't stand the Pats, but that's really just a quirk.

Actually, it was their fault. Four of their opponents would have had winning records if they hadn't lost to the Pats.

dickfreckle: The symbiotic relationship between Saints fans and the team is epic, here. Even our panhandlers and assorted gutter punks are muttering "mrrrrph hmmmpph WHODAT."

This reminds me of a story I meant to tell you guys. On Christmas Day, I went to watch the Mavs game (that's the NBA Champion Dallas Mavericks to you, but I digress). Going through security, I had to flop my purse up on the table for it to be poked at by a security officer. I got this short little old black man. I open up my purse & he pokes around and sees my Cowboys coin purse. He looks up at me and goes, "What's that on your wallet, young lady?" I say, "Dallas Cowboys, sir!" He leans over and looks up at me..... "How'd they do yesterday?"

......

"I can't seem to remember, sir"

He leans back with a grin on his face.... "Heh heh... WHO DAT"

tl;dr I got trolled by a Saints fan working security at a Mavs game

Maybe if you're only on Fark - there are plenty of fans here and lots of respectful guys from other teams (except for those pair of Lions fans that cried every time they played). Go on other sites where people aren't quite as nice and you'll see. Like reddit! Honestly don't know why people hate on Simmons, but while I'm sharing, I thought I'd share what I believe is the funniest thing he's ever written. Also, one of the funniest things I've ever read.

The context is he's comparing moments of the season to similar moments in Top Gun. Yes, parallels between a cheezy eighties movie and a full NFL season.

----------------------

17. "I'm going to take a shower. Thank you. I enjoyed being here."

Just a classic moment in movie history. Has there ever been a stranger stream of dialogue? Did somebody actually write that? Has anyone ever wrapped up a date by saying those words?

Anyway, I enjoyed this sequence so much, and it's brought me so much joy over the past 17 years, I'm giving this one to my favorite coach: the immortal Dave McGinnis, the man responsible for the TV highlight of the summer that didn't involve Nick Lachey, Jessica Simpson, or anyone from Paradise Hotel and the OC.

I'll set the scene: We're about 14 minutes into NFL Films's 2002 Yearbook about the Arizona Cardinals, which was already funny enough because it made their 4-1 start seem like the Normandy Invasion, then casually skipped over the fact that they lost nine of their next 10 games. And McGinnis has already been so over-the-top, it almost defies imagination -- it's like he watched Pacino's locker-room speech in "Any Given Sunday," then spent the summer improvising deleted scenes in front of a bathroom mirror (while downing cups of coffee).

So McGinnis is addressing the team after a dramatic 9-6 win over the Cowboys -- an ESPN Instant Classic if there ever was one -- and his carotid artery is ready to splatter all over the place. Pacing like an absolute maniac, he belts out the following speech:

"What did we expect? (Some grumbling) WHAT DID WE EXPECT??? (Louder grumbling, confusion) We expected it, men. We expected it! And when you expect to win, you earn the right to be there to win. You've earned the right to EXPECT to win. And you've earned much more than that."

Fade to commercial.

Now ...

I'm not sure what any of that means. I'm not sure we'll ever be sure, and if we ever come close to solving the mystery, there will probably be about three bags of marijuana involved. But I can tell you this: During the tail end of the speech, McGinnis walks by one of his players, who's desperately trying not to laugh as his coach belts out the last lines.

So was it one of the greatest moments in NFL history? Right up there with Alan Ameche's 1-yard run, the Kellen Winslow Game, Elway's Drive, Vinatieri's Kick, Lynn Swann's Catch and everything else?

Yeah. I think so. But that's just me. When you expect to laugh, you've earned the right to expect to laugh. And sometimes, you've even earned more than that.

God, that's ten years old, and I still can't hold back the laughter,

Hobodeluxe: Saints over the Niners by 6
Pats over Denver by 3

You're way off. Not with your team choice, just with your spread.

Saints by no less than 13. (I would say 20, but the 49ers defense is pretty solid.)
Patriots by 21. (I would say by 28, but it's their turn to get screwed by the tuck rule.)
