Cool they're bringing Captain Pike back. He did get a pretty raw deal in TOS so he's probably pretty happy in the parallel universe. But wait, now he can't live forever with the cute chick in the illusion universe? Dammit.

You know you're old when you read these "wow, I can't believe they're all in one place" puff pieces and they're writing about the actors that came four decades after the original, which you actually watched back in the day.

There's no reason not to. Make him an Admiral. Besides, it will really piss off the Abrams haters, and I'm OK with that.

I was surprisingly impressed with Star Trek. I mean it's the very definition of the unnecessary remake but once you get past that, it's pretty good. But what is it about Abrams' puss that just makes be one to belt him one? If I ever see him, I hope he's carrying textbooks so I can dump them.
...and it's been said a million times but ease up on the lens flares. The bridge has a beautiful design but you can hardly see it.

He has to be an admiral or commadore or 'fleet captain" (like in TOS), unless they're going to walk back that whole Kirk goes from cadet to captain in the blink of an eye deal.
Best guess, admiral that gives out the mission order to Kirk, setting up the story.

Except for the engineering brewery, the overall ship interiors were pretty good. You're not gonna match something like Battlestar Galactica for a vision of practical, gritty looking sets. Those looked very much like actual, working vessels. Most of the Star Trek sets(aside from DS9) seemed too cushy. But when one wasn't blinded by lenseflare, the new Star Trek interiors were pretty good, too. The Apple Store look of the bridge took some getting used to, but certainly no worse than Picard's lounge bridge on the Enterprise D.

Yeah, word was Anheuser-Busch donated their factory as a set, for a mention in the bar scene. Already cutting it close to going over budget, they decided to location shoot engineering than go with the set + CGI they imagined. Too bad, as it was pretty damn sexy:

Actually, for me it's a tie between Nemesis and Generations. Nemesis was just a terrible attempt to remake Khan and Generations had plot holes you could drive a Dyson Sphere through. All of the TNG movies sucked in their own way, First Contact being closest to good.

Generations and Insurrection both felt like extended TNG episodes. First Contact was terrific, to the point of my willingness to use it as an example of how good the TNG cast can really be. Now, Nemesis? I hate it. It's not that it's a horrible movie. No, it just pisses me off. The Romulans are awesome bad guys; we rarely (relatively speaking) get a story with them involved. Finally, Nemesis comes along promising Romulans and what happens? A story that would've made bad *fan-fiction*?
That said, 1 of 4 movies being "good" isn't a track record to brag about. Police Academy had better luck.

I personally think Insurrection is a bit on the underrated side. Not a good movie, but not as terrible as made out. One of the problems with the TNG movies was that there often wasn't enough for all the characters to do and several of the characters didn't act they way they did in the long series itself. Picard, first and formost, is like a different guy in the movies from the series, while Crusher and LaForge are hardly more than guest stars. But aside from the shuttle chase sing along, Data as a floatation device and Riker breaking out the joystick on the Enterprise, I didn't think Insurrection was that terrible. If I were to have a list of the worst things ever in all of Star Trek, I doubt anything from that movie makes it, though there is certainly nothing really great about it either. It's just there.

Or yet another Data that is just happened upon by Picard's clone, of all people. When Spock died it was emotional because there wasn't a "spare". Sure he'd be reborn in the next film but we didn't know that then. So I guess they both sucked in their own special way.

The only thing about Insurrection was that I didn't side with the "good guys". These people are living on a planet with radiation that can cure everyone of everything and they refused to share it. It wasn't even their planet, they were squatters. So I didn't buy the premise but other than that I guess it wasn't terrible. I don't know, I haven't seen it in like a decade.

I just want to know how farked up he could have gotten that he had to be in a wheel chair in the 23rd century. At least his face wasn't all messed up like in the show. We can fix that in the 21st. Or at least make him more presentable.

Sure it did. Soren wants to get into the Nexus that he got into once by getting caught into it with a ship but doesn't want to try that again for whatever reason so he destroys a star with a gas powered rocket that destroys the star a second after it's launched (fast rocket). So he and PIcard are in the Nexus and Picard is free to go anywhere at any time he wants. Does he go to when he first meets Soren and throw him in the brig? No, he goes to 5 minutes before the rocket is launched and drags Kirk with him. And it just goes on from there.

There was a pretty desperate attempt to create a Trail Of Tears scenario with Picard's speech about forced relocations. The story missed on a dispassionate, logical voice to make the argument that the needs to the many (the rest of the galaxy) outweighed the needs of the few(hippie squatters)

Generations was cool, but it should have been a season 7 episode. It really didn't have legs to be a movie. Two glaring issues:
Ships can't survive the nexus, but why not just sit around in a space suit? Why did it NEED to be a planet?
If the Nexus can deliver you to any time, as was said; why go back to seconds before it arrived. Picard could have saved the D and the Shat could have taken care of Soran back in the 23rd century. The damn movie was entertaining and had some eye candy, but it was very lose with it's story.

Hey, I'm not knocking his other stuff which I do enjoy. But the fact is he really phoned it in with Trek, which really had me rubbing my head. The main overture isn't so bad, but then he does nothing with it but repeat it verbatim.
Labor Of Love and Enterprising Young Men are good stand alone tracks, but then you run into the problem where he didn't find a way to really tell a story with the soundtrack. The changes in mood, tempo, ect are very jarring, sometimes even in the middle of a track, and don't complement each other well. The overture works well from the prologue and title screen, but as a booming melody for the enterprise, not so much.
Say what you will, but it's probably his worst score to date, which is unfortunate as the rest of the film was pretty damn good. It needs to be better next time around. It definitely needs to be more memorable and "epic". I'm hoping he spends some serious time on it to get it right.

Problem is VOY and DS9 just got done with the whole marquis plot lines, where politics of the federation basically force relocated or fought against their own border citizens. Insurrection wasn't much different, but for Picard doing a 180 on his orders, that would have court marshaled the whole crew. He didn't even have a Kirk Trek IV, VI trump card.

I have a feeling the whole thing was rushed, since it came out the same year as the end of the show. But that's no excuse for half assing the script. A decent team of writers can crank out something as simple as a Trek movie in a few weeks, tops.
