Impossible! Farkers have repeatedly told us only Americans are fat.

Wait, I thought the United States had a monopoly on morbid obesity.

God forbid they put the GOTdamm fork down. 500lbs isn't 'in the genes' or 'being big-boned'. it's being weak.

As a fat hog I expect nothing less than total humiliation if I am in fact too large for the scanner. What would be the compassionate and dignified path in this case? Buy a new CT, a new wing for the hospital to put it in, and bill Obamacare? How about the doctor tell them to lose some weight or die trying?

These people can cry me a river of rich creamery drawn butter.

Where folks overeat, there will be fat folks. This is actually an excellent & practical idea!
Since it's all done electronically anyway (isn't it?), there should not be a problem licensing veterinary scanners to do very large humans -- as long as the scanning platform is suitably cleaned, preferably sterilized which it should be anyway, between patients of whatever species.

I don't know how legitimate it is, but apparently US has the most obese people, second is Mexico. UK is third.

FTA: CT scans are used by doctors to assess body fat as well as for more general health checks to see if anything is wrong.

Whuh? I thought you just used a tape measure and a scale?

And would a CT scan even be useful on soft tissue? (IANA Doctor, but TV told me that's what MRI was for.)

I think the tank is still the best way to measure body fat. Damn site cheaper than a CT scan, too.

OF course not. Because they can still use the same equipment everyone else uses. You can still be examined by a ultrasound, you just can't fit into something with a predetermined amount of space. Such as, say, a CT scan. You see, physics does not allow you to pass through "solid" (in reality, matter is full of empty space, but i digress) matter, and when you hit the framework of the machine, the "solid matter" does not allow you to progress any further. Now, as a result, you are not able to reach the scanning equipment inside of the machine itself.

I thought this was a busted myth, zoos have no bigger machines then human hospitals. Looks like they just got a bigger table, but the machine is the same for the example in the article.

Well, we use the hospital scanners on pigs (for research) during the night, so I really don't see the difference.

I am ok with that. There should be a priority list for mockery though. Something like:

1) The Obese
2) Crack heads
3) alcoholics
4) Everyone else.

I'm having a CT scan done on Monday...

Thank heavens I'm not massively obese! My nearest zoos are Chester Zoo and Blackpool zoo!
(No, even if I was massive, I wouldn't appreciate the day out - imagine the 'wide load' stickers the ambulance would need and the police escort...)

Hell, I'm not even close to being obese!

2012-01-14 12:16:11 PM
I am ok with this. Being simply fat won't stop you from fitting in a ct scanner. By the time you're to big there isn't really a valid excuse.

You can see fat on both. An MRI is used for soft tissue, but fat just shows up as a white mass on it. MRI will give you details on soft tissue a CT will not, but when it comes to fat detail doesn't matter.

Besides, most MRI machines have a 300 pound weight limit and a smallish opening.

But have they tried rubbing them down with KY Jelly?

2012-01-14 12:25:01 PM
There is nothing new about this. Zoo CT scanners have been used to scan obese humans for decades.

You might be thinking of MRI machines, which usually have the same size opening at both hospitals and zoos.

LOL Maybe you should read the article you link to before trying to use it to invalidate an argument.

FTA: "Fed up, on July 18, Pond sent an open letter addressed to the nation's "radiographers and their instructors." His message? Jumbo-sized zoo scanners are an urban legend.

"Very few zoos own a CT machine - only one of which is known to me - and none own MRIs," Pond says. "And that one zoo, along with veterinary specialty practices that do have this larger equipment, obtained them from the human side. Zoos do not have any special imaging equipment for large animals that is not already available in the human field."

So yes, it is a myth.

I think you'd also want a vet to be in on the procedure for a CT scan. They would have much better experience getting good scans through that much extra mass.

It's not just the scanning equipment. The table, the extra space, the experience scanning through massive beasts, lifting equipment such as hoists, etc. Try moving a five or six hundred pounder from a bed onto a scanning table or whatnot. Oh, and you're not allowed to drop them.

Shoulda shown it scanning a cow. My brother-in-law weighs over 370, is a cop, and is going in for surgery again, yet won't stop eating fast food. . Always colon-type issues. I asked my wife when they where gonna pull the branch out of his arse.

I was obese, fixed it, and I don't have those issues.

/Not 370 thought.
//That's just gross.

Lets just take them out back and shoot them like you would a horse with a broken leg. They aren't really people.
