All I saw when the names were popping up was the "Wes" and I thought it was Wes Craven.

Doesn't look as good as Wes Anderson's version of God of War.

Ah, yes, Wes Anderson. Making hipster movies that consistently fail to entertain. I got suckered by Rushmore. Never again. That looks awful, but no more awful than his other movies.

/Not trolling, for those of you too incredulous to think that anyone might think Wes Anderson anything less than a comedic genius.
//He sucks.

Rushmore was good, but only because of the over-the-top stage production of Apocalypse Now. The voiceovers and the Bill Murray love story were cheap film-school tripe.

Ishkur: Is this a comedy? It looks like it has that quirky "Napoleon Dynamite" brand of humor. I assume that's humor. Is it humor?

Even I thought Napoleon Dynamite was great; I was fully prepared to despise it after every friend of mine in tight jeans and Converse sneakers suggested it. Damn if that film didn't charm the crap out of me.

That said, Wes Anderson farking blows. I made every effort to power through "Life Aquatic", but I just couldn't do it. Like watching paint dry. He seems like a talented enough cinematographer, but his stories are flat out narcolepsy inducing.

//Yeah yeah, I don't "get it".

The styles of humor in Wes Anderson movies and in Napoleon Dynamite are completely different. Wes Anderson movies are typically about eccentric, misunderstood geniuses. Napoleon Dynamite was about a functionally retarded boy and his functionally retarded friends in functionally retarded Idaho. Gosh!

Oh great, another Wes Anderson movie for all my "it's so deep" friends to lord over me, while they shrug off any criticism of it with a smug "you just don't get it, man".

No thanks. The only good thing he ever did was copy Buckaroo Banzai's end credits sequence, and even calling that "good" is a bit of a stretch.

Not exactly a Wes Anderson problem then.

Let me explain: I farking love Wes Anderson. Bottle Rocket, Rushmore and Tenenbaums are some of my fave movies ever.

The Life Aquatic was by far his worst effort. I own most of his other stuff, but I won't even rewatch TLA.

You find that kind of nonsense in every artistic field. Sometimes it borders on a strange form of hysteria.

Mark Rothko's paintings are a good example. People apparently wept at exhibitions of his work despite the fact that they largely consisted of three horizontal lines across a canvas. The guy painted the same damn thing over and over and over and over again with different color schemes (Google it if you think I'm kidding) and the technical precision of a chimp on crank. Yet, you'll find no shortage of art critics who will tell you that if you don't appreciate it, then the fault lies with your philistine tastes.

God, it's like he's just making parodies of his own movies now. So does that mean you aren't going to see it? Hell no, I love parodies.

contrapunctus: Mark Rothko's paintings are a good example.

The guy was a genius. Not artistically, like you said he was a joke, but for having the critics praise his art and selling it for millions. He eventually slit his wrists, maybe he couldn't handle the joke any longer.

For the Life Aquatic haters:

Try watching it one more time, but with the understanding that it is a movie about grief and loss. Allow yourself to let go into it at a symbolic level. It is a movie that requires multiple viewings.

I originally abhorred it and now it is one of my favorites. The scene where they are all in the sub looking out at the tiger shark unleashes a torrent of tears every time for me now.

And the music. Oh my.. the music. There is nothing like Seu Jorge singing Bowie.

I completely agree. And what's with these kids using "cool" to describe something they like? Cool deals with temperature! I bet when they're adults, they'll look back on that and feel ashamed. How dare the language evolve or change on me!

Willem DaFoe totally steals that movie.

/The Darjeeling Limited is Anderson's worst movie (not including the side-film with Natalie Portman nude).
