That picture is fake. I don't know why they posted it, but the article says quite plainly that it hit a reef.

News reports 2 no 6 no 10 dead.

The captain told passengers it was an electrical fault.

Italian courts will kill him.

Somebody must have lit the grail-shaped beacon again.

2012-01-13 09:56:50 PM
From the article: Holidaymakers were forced to flee the 1,500-cabin Costa Concordia in lifeboats when it hit a reef less than two hours after leaving port.

Methinks that picture is when they're towing the boat back to harbor, not actually hitting a Lighthouse.

That looks terrible, but my heart will go on.

That James Cameron guy is taking the marketing for the Titanic 3D re-release a bit too far.

But newsflash?

2012-01-13 09:56:56 PM
"Some leapt overboard and swam to shore as the brightly-lit ship started to sink into the black waters"

So did the ship finish sinking or what? The article managed to be ambiguous about this, impressive.

That's gonna leave a mark

Searching Google News first brings up a paid link:
"Cruise Ships at Costa Cruise. Experience the Costa Concordia cruise ship for a cruise vacation you will never forget."

Sounds like truth in advertising.

For which the ship is to blame? Not many.

IF only there were some kind of thing intended to warn approaching ships that they're nearing land.. possibly with a beacon of some sort. And you could put it in a house of sorts..

Nishu: That picture is fake. I don't know why they posted it, but the article says quite plainly that it hit a reef.

Indeed, because why would a lighthouse be used to warn of a hazard to shipping?

There are people next to the lighthouse, suggesting it's about 24 feet tall. "One of the biggest ships in the Costa fleet" is not right on top of it, it's some distance in the background. It's an illusion, and the headline is a joke. (One that I remember reading in Reader's Digest "All In A Day's Work" when I was a kid).

That's been around a whole lot longer than '95. Old coworker was a machinists mate on the Enterprise, and he heard it in the 60's.

Don't know either way, but I can say that lighthouses (and radar buoys) are often placed to mark reefs.

Walker: Captain Stevie Wonder reported he never saw it coming.

He stated he would defeat the lighthouse in the next match and secure his place in an exhibition round against the Rock of Gibraltar.

2012-01-13 10:10:35 PM
The picture isn't fake. Look at the perspective. The lighthouse is in the foreground, football fields away from the cruise ship. The ship hit the reef that the lighthouse marks, not the lighthouse itself.

Oh great, now the Doctor will have to work extra hard to figure out who the Rutan is.

2012-01-13 10:12:05 PM
"there were 1,000 Italians on the ships as well as 500 Germans and around 150 French people"

So, the Germans lined up neatly and used all the life boats for themselves, the Italians are still arguing about who should be first off the ship, and the French are just waiting in their rooms for their inevitable death?

2012-01-13 10:12:17 PM
Welp. Someone's career as an officer is over. I wonder what the cause was this time. Ignore a buoy? Thought they could cut corners and shave time? A green Third listening to navigation advice from the helmsman?

Whatever the cause, that's gonna stick for a long-long while.
