Great Dane jumped in the way, laying over her body and taking most of the blows until the man threw both of them out of a second story window.
As far as guard dogs go, I would want my money back. Ghandi Dog was lucky.

Wow, what an amazing dog, and good on the woman for keeping him with her. Awesome story.
Now I want to read a story about how the guy with the hammer was caught, charged, convicted and put away for a long, long time.

Dogs' (and Wolves') default programming is an amazing piece of work.
Diseased limb that won't heal? Amputate and move on with life.
(Stupid) pack leader in danger? Suffer the slings and arrows until the pack leader gets her act together.
Hopefully the poor lady has learned a lesson from her dog and will not stay with abusive assholes. Maybe not, but we can hope.

Like most battered women's shelters, the Rose Brooks Center did not accommodate pets. But this was no ordinary dog: when her boyfriend tried to kill the woman with a hammer, her fearless Great Dane jumped in the way, laying over her body and taking most of the blows until the man threw both of them out of a second story window.
He Threw 'em out the window, the window, he threw 'em out the window.

Yes - and then they'd put the dog down for attacking a human, no matter how much of a waste said human was.

Too many women stay with beaters simply because they have no place to take the pets and know that the pets would get hurt to punish the woman if they left. More shelters should have a pro-pets policy or a relationship with a local shelter / rescue agency.

God, I wish that woman had an angry pit bull.
My niece brought home a raggedy stray a few years ago. My brother was outvoted and ended up adopting her. 6 weeks later, he wakes up to a furious dog barking, growling and howling. He runs into her room, thinking this dog is attacking his 7 year old.
The dog is in full defense mode, at the window, my niece is crying because a "monster" is outside the window. The window screen is cut. When the police get there, they find footprints and point out that her room is *NOT* the easiest way to get into the house, but it is the only window with Disney princess curtains.
TL; DR- dogs are awesome. *MUCH* better than people.

Um, I disrespect yer violent reference.
If you need a hammer to kill a cat, you are overfunded.
I'll kill one with my hands, if I have to.
I hope I never have to.
I'll make it quick-click.

Sadly, I'll have to wait to get a dog. I can afford to feed one, but I'm not financially secure enough right now to afford any unexpected vet bills. Some day....

My dog (pound rescue, part pit, part some kind of hound, part whoknows) has saved my son from two rattlesnakes, literally placed himself between my son and the snakes and barked and danced around like mad till I came to see what the fuss was about.
Also drove off an intruder on the property when my son was home. If it's just me home, he just barks a few times to let me know I should go check something out. If my son is home, he goes into full defensive froth mode.
Good dog, he knows I am the alpha, and does what I say.
Yes, he gets steak some times.
As should the dog in the TFA.
