Dammit! Any old fart trying to buy $15 worth of firewood in Russia, or any 14-year-old in Africa, can buy select-fire AKMs from the late '50s, but can I get one for love or money to help complete my Soviet small arms collection? Which is kept locked in a safe? Hell no.

Russia's Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin... said he will launch a probe into the mysterious appearance of automatic rifles. "Wow! I will hold a meeting with Izhmash about its firearms next week and we will deal with this miracle," he wrote on his Facebook page
In related news, Russia's Deputy Prime Minister uses the word "Wow" and has a Facebook page.

I've got one, supposedly (although it might be Bulgarian), on a milled US receiver. VERY nice, much more heavy-duty innards than most clones. But the wood's all farked up; has brass pins that block the cleaning rod hole.

Remember when illegal arms dealing was such a big market in other countries? Then the US just starting sending war machines to everyone.
Now the markets have reversed, it seems.

Milled receiver AKs use pretty much the same internal parts as any other AK. All you're getting with the milled receiver is more weight and
possibly
a bit more accuracy due to less flexing.
For better durability and accuracy and without so much extra weight, what you really want is an RPK-type receiver, stamped from heavier sheet metal and with a beefier front trunnion.

Saigas are decent, but they're still 1.0mm steel and standard sized trunnions - nothing inherently tougher than any other AKM. They have a reputation for above average build quality and they have the mystique of being made in Russia but that's about it.

As long as you don't care about the risk of being sent to PMITA prison.
Even if you DIY, it's still illegal to make a select-fire AK unless you have the appropriate FFL and SOT.

I have seen estimates of over 100 million AK 47's having been manufactured and largely dumped all over the world. Russia and a number of other countries made and continue to make them. They are one of the ongoing curses of the third world. They are cheap, and as noted in this thread rugged and reliable. No one really knows how long it is going to take to wear out the ones already in the hands of 'insurgents', 'pirates', 'religious fanatics' criminals, and God knows who else that shouldn't have them. This weapon has gone a long way to making many areas of the world lawless and brutal.

People are just as good at being lawless and brutal to each other with rocks and pointy sticks. On the other hand, something that allows the weak to stand on equal footing with the lawless and brutal to resist being victimized can't be all bad.

Do you think if the AK had never been invented that another cheap, easily mass produced weapon wouldn't have filled that role?
AK or not, those lawless areas were guaranteed to be brutal no matter what.

Seconded. If it wasn't an AK47 on some flags, it would be an MP42 redesigned.
I believe he made a comment many years after he designed the AK, that it was not his goal to make a gun, but just be a good engineer at whatever the task was. It happened to be a rifle.
