Hopefully they will both be left behind soon.

I read the first left behind book, for the same reason I read the Twilight books. Any literary event catches my attention, and I need to make sure I'm not missing anything.

Now, here are some words that I never thought I would string together in this order:

The Twilight books were better written.

I was traveling when they were hot so I read them all. It takes about an hour max to polish off one volume, so where was the harm? I like to see how these people think.

Note to Mr. LaHaye -- Newt would have been left behind. If not joining the other side and polishing the Antichrist's shoes.

Now it's time to wrap up that Kirk Cameron endorsement!

I have read some Christian romance/mystery fiction that was free on the kindle that was better than that crap.

It only takes an hour if you're really skimming. Which is probably actually okay, because very little actually happens in each book. There's some expositional action, the characters complain about how bad things are getting for a while, detail travel plans and talk on the phone a lot, and then, typically at the end, some sort of disaster/divine judgement hits. At this point, the main characters use their government statuses and the resources that they've hoarded to save their women and ignore the millions of people dying around them. Rinse, repeat.

In LaHaye's defense, you gotta write down to your target demo's reading level.

if we're at the point where you have to justify why you read a book, I'm afraid we've gone too far.

Full disclosure: I read "The Loch" on vacation in Bermuda two years ago. I bought it at the airport

/actually wasn't bad

It's like Star Wars for teenage girls.

If you read the books as adventure fiction, they're quite fun (read the whole series). If you read them as religious paraphernalia, they're creepily preachy (and you're an idiot).

To be fair, the Twilight books were written with a more critical-thinking audience in mind...

If I implied a justification it was unintentional. I thought they might be cool/scary in and Exorcist/Omen sense. Not even close. But you're right - they were all over the airports and easy to find.

At least I wasn't embarrassed to be seen reading them. Another one I picked up on the road I had to hide while reading.

Yikes. Do you also eat bad-tasting food that is also unhealthy just to make sure you aren't missing out on a foodie trend, or is this type of behavior confined to your reading activities?

Thank you for the summary. It fully satisfied my lingering miniscule interest in reading those books.

LaHaye's endorsed a minion of the Whore of Babylon.

I read all of the Twilight books. Why? Because my friend bought all of them, and we MST3K'd them. There were three of us, we traded, we laughed and laughed.

I finished the final one because I did not believe that the vampire baby ate its way out of the mother's womb and then the werewolf fell in love with the zombie vampire baby, and they all went off and stared at the bad vampires until they went away.

I thought she was farking with me. The girl who actually *purchased* the books, made it half way through the second before giving up in disgust, and I will always remember her description:

"I've read gay Buffy fan fic on a teenager's live journal that was better than this".

How did they ever put that to film? I won't know until RiffTraxx does the movie.

Why would anybody accept the endorsement from someone who thinks the world is ending? Or vote for such a person (Palin).

I'm quite serious this. You think rapturites have anybody's best interest in mind?

It's possible they think he'd be so terrible as president, so evil, as to actually bring about the apocalypse. That's how these crazies think, you know- they're so eager for Jesus to come back and smite everyone but them that they actively seek out ways to help make it happen.

Nah, there are histories of people who were Christian. Like King James. Those have some truth in ... Christian travel guides, yeah.

what_now: I read all of the Twilight books.

I picked up one of the Twilight books recently in a bookstore. I picked a random page and started reading, promising myself to stop when I encountered the first instance of didactic imagery.

I stopped 14 pages later -- I couldn't find any. I gave up and put the rubbish down.

The books are seriously seriously BAD writing. Wretchingly bad. Just the very structure and composition of the writing itself makes me cringe and squirm to the point where I want to grab a red pen and start correcting mistakes. It reads like some teenage girl's intimate diary full of pronoun prose and clumsy descriptions but no vivid imagery. There are NO LITERARY DEVICES in it at all. No creative imagery, no metaphors, no similes, no allusions, no symbolism, no clever euphemisms, no evocative descriptions or settings, and the word usage is severely limited. She has a stunted vocabulary and an extremely juvenile writing style. Every page reads like "then this happened, then this happened, and he said this, then she said this, and they went and did this"...there's just no color or life in the writing, it's just flat, drab, uninteresting prose.

JK Rowling is motherfarking Tolstoy next to Stephanie Meyer. I understand its meant for preteens, but good god, I read Christopher Pike when I was young and he was way more expressive and engaging than this Meyer twit.

And it seems, with indie and self-publishing on the rise, we're going to see a lot more of this pulp writing. As if fanfiction.net didn't scare me enough.
