The Miss America prelim rounds ended last night. Miss Hawaii emerged as a front-runner for her beauty and a demonstration of rope trickery. Great Balls of Fire indeed. (pics, vid)

I mean, I would be embarrassed to put that on a resume.

I remember I'd watch these things every year as a kid and then immediately lose most if my interest the second Wisconsin got eliminated.
Anyone want to guess how Wisconsin tends to do at beauty pageants? Here's a hint:
not very well.
TFA says Wisconsin won one of the prelim competitions. The way Wisconsin usually does, that's probably good to get past the first cut at most.

I know Miss Ohio from my undergrad days. She was in the glee club that I played guitar for. While I tend to think of these pageants as superficial, she is one of the nicest and most intelligent people I've come across in my days on the Earth. Don't know that she'll win, but she certainly does not fit the stereotype of a vapid know-nothing.

A few become actresses. Lee Meriwether comes to mind as probably the most successful one. A lot go into public relations work; I know two Miss America contestants who are public info/spokesperson types. I also seem to remember that at least two State lottery CEOs have pageant backgrounds. I am posting from my phone and too lazy to Google it to be sure.

I think Vanessa Williams has been even more successful as an actress than Lee Meriwether Nevertheless, the latter's rump was outstanding in the Catwoman costume. She may not have exuded sultry sexuality the way Julie Newmar did, but damn, dat azz! I call your particular attention to when she's looking through the periscope aboard Penguin's submarine.
Even Bess Myerson and Mary Ann Mobley's acting careers rivalled Lee Meriwether's

I had the honor if interviewing Miss America 2001, Angela Perez Baraquio back in 2004. She was the first Asian and the first teacher to win, and she was an alumnus of my high school. I can honestly say that she was genuinely intelligent, warm and extremely friendly.
I enjoy the Miss America pageants much more that the other stuff out there; Miss USA/Miss Universe in particular, (although Brook Lee from Hawaii won in 1997 and I also met her and she was exactly like Baraquio) but my point is that Miss America looks just as much into the girls' academic and educational accomplishments and not only their looks. You have to be a well-put together human being to win Miss America, while you can be Miss USA and also be a total dodo and raging biatch as long as you are smoking hot.
