Even a price drop to $999 just 13 months after its release didn't help sales.

Gee, people don't want to spend a thousand dollars on a phone that is essentially useless unless someone ELSE also spent a thousand dollars on the same phone?

Anyone else remember Nickelodeon using them for their Halloween night contests?

Video phones haven't been catching on since the '60s. Apparently nobody cares enough to want one all the time.

It was the closest you could come to vaporeware without actually being vaporware. Nintendo trolled us hard with the 64DD back in the day..

Fear the Clam: Video phones haven't been catching on since the '60s. Apparently nobody cares enough to want one all the time.

Skyping has pretty much replaced any need for that. If I wanted to I could Skype my parents on the other side of the country and have those features. But really.... why? Why do I need to see them and have them see me as I make faces about my Mother's latest bout of the flu? Uggghhhhh. That's what I want to do.

I had nearly forgot about the activator. I remember the kid whose parents got him everything got it. Used it once and thats it.

Not really, just a bunch of normal people in their 30s-40s. Their argument was that it was less work than getting everyone set up properly, but I think it really had more to do with the MLM scam they all bought into a bit earlier. (ACN Direct)

I know a lot of people that are using Skype, facetime or google messenger to do exactly that. I don't think that it was a matter of not catching on it was a matter of making it cheap and having the bandwidth. We've solved both of those problems.

Only a year later, the Diamond Rio PMP300 portable MP3 player debuted and went on to sell over 200,000 units.

This will always make me sad. Diamond and Creative got screwed hard in the MP3 player area by apple making itunes a walled garden, that only worked with ipods. It made all other mp3 players fiarly undesirable, as they couldn't work with the best music store, in many folks mind, out there.

As if Apple was any better. Heck, itunes became the posterboy for DRM in the digital music world.

Just found my Diamond Rio PMP500 when I was packing up to move. Noticed the little slots on the side - really curious just how much storage I could give the little PMP - my old ipod finally bought the farm tweo weeks ago. Be kinda fun to use the Rio.

The problem with video phones is you have to put clothes on.

The RIO used Smart Media cards I believe, which of course was a failed flash memory format that topped out at 128MB before it was discontinued. However I believe there were adapters to use xD cards in Smart Media slots. Those went up to 2GB, though whether the Rio would work with them I don't know.

yeah, I had a YEPP YP32 (super clearance from compusa) and it could take smart media BUT topped out at 32mb cards. Back then I used to re-rip to 64kbps mono, so you could fit about 30 songs on a card.

What delayed the mass adoption of video calling was the need for dedicated hardware and connections. Once
cheap broadband into the home became widely available, it was bound to finally take off.

Eat up Martha

I was prepared to wait in line all day long to play with one of the demo units at Comdex. Then I heard people grumbling about how crappy the handwriting recognition was and they couldn't make them do anything useful. So I passed and didn't regret it. Funny thing is when the Palm Pilot came out years later handwriting recognition still sucked balls but they came up with their shorthand scratches and it was almost like a badge of honor to have learned to write accurately on a Palm Pilot. I can't help but wonder if the Newton would have done a lot better if Apple hadn't tried to pretend that you could write naturally on their device.
