it's in chronological order.

list really fails because they didn't include My Bloody Valentine, especially in light of the Strokes and Coldplay listings.

Love them or hate them, the Strokes are one of the tightest bands you can see live.

My Coachella thread earlier this week went un-greened. For those interested and unaware, the line-up has been announced. Black Keys, Dr. Dre and Snoop, Radiohead (again).

downstairs: No The Mars Volta (new window)? List fails.

Their shows are like being on acid without being on acid. At the Drive-In is playing this year.

Those guys are always awesome live. They're one of those bands you can take for granted because of their style, but when you see other bands cover them on youtube, you are reminded of what sets them apart from every other modern rock band. I still can't believe I missed them at the Warfield a few years back, when Chuck Mosely performed a few songs with them.

Regarding the article, I'd throw Cut Chemist's set from 2002 in there and I have no problem with the Strokes being on there, but I would've chosen their 2002 set as well, when they were fresh. In other news, it's been ten years since I've been to Coachella.

Also nobody gets the crowd going at Coachella like Gogol Bordello, maybe not the most talented band of the groups, but you have to give em a nod just for turning the masses into a deranged party

That was my first thought, too. Isn't that performance widely considered one of the best live performances of the last 20 years, Coachella or otherwise?

Hell, the only reason I know about Coachella is because of that Daft Punk performance.

List is farking RETARDED.

How about DJ Shadow in '99 while the sun was setting behind him?

How about Tool, with the naked acrobatic interpretive dancers hanging from the top of the main stage?

How about A Perfect Circle's 2nd ever live performance?

How about Rahzel deciding to do an impromptu set with the Skratch Picklez?

How about motherfarkin' Gil Scott Heron on the outdoor stage?

How about Manu Chao having the ENTIRE field up and jumping to the music?

How about Black Jack Johnson?

How about MF Doom?

How about farking Gnarls Barkley in their Wizard of Oz outfits?

Beck right before he debuted Midnight Vultures? Or when he played in the side tent?

/the list is the top performances FROM A POP-INDIE VIEWPOINT...that is all.

I dug what I've seen of Cochella (not sure why they won't release more than I think 2 songs from their concert.)

I do agree... they were somewhat flat at VooDoo fest in 2009. Mostly had to do with choosing some bizarre songs that didn't play well live.

I saw Pavement at Coachella two years ago. I wanted to love it, but it really wasn't all that great. So unless there was something about the 1999 performance that cured cancer or involved walking on water, I doubt it should be on the list (sorry, can't see video at work).

They included the Flaming Lips' 2004 performance, and I agree with that. It was only a 3 song set, but it was friggin' AWESOME. I'll also agree with Radiohead and Air in 2004 as some of the best performances. Hell, 2004 was a pretty EPIC Coachella. Still stands out in my memory against so many Coachellas that followed.

However, all of you failed to mention the CURE at Coachella in 2009 when they played and played until they finally shut all the electricity off and forced us out. That was the best ever.

martissimo: Also nobody gets the crowd going at Coachella like Gogol Bordello, maybe not the most talented band of the groups, but you have to give em a nod just for turning the masses into a deranged party

I saw this. People went mental. I have several videos of just people dancing during this set. It made me into a fan.

Their songs tend to have a lot going on and a lot of improv live. The newer songs tend to be sloppy and the older stuff tighter. They also tend to play long ass sets, which can make them even more grating than they already are.

I didn't see them at Coachella, but since they put on the same show wherever they went, I feel like I can speak authoritatively since I was at their Coney Island gig. And to that, I say that Daft Punk was so unbelievably good that my face pretty much melted off. Never have been to a show as good as that and likely never will.

So, yeah, the list ultimately fails without Daft Punk.

They picked the wrong year for Kraftwerk. In 2004, they were in the mid-size tent and they killed. It was so packed in there that you literally couldn't turn around, the sound was amazing, the videos amazing, the robots amazing, I thought the place was going to explode.

The Pixies sucked, and sucked hard that year. They were so obviously there for the paycheck it was painful.

Since they've now gone to a "buy the tickets months before we announce who's actually playing" system, I probably won't be back.

/*sigh* You're still on my lawn

I used to love The Mars Volta till I went to one of their concerts and they were berating us (the crowd) for moshing. It wasn't even that violent just alot of shoving and people having fun and helping others up.Its really hypocritical when they bounce around the stage like their on crack and then expect people not to get amped up.

So fark you pink floyd hipster jerkoffs. I bought a ticket to your concert and am paying your rent. Shut the fu(k up and play and unless were throwing shiat at you or doing something to keep you from performing, mind your own farking business.

I think they learned their lesson when they started biatching at the crowd at a show and someone threw a bottle full of piss on them and they canceled the rest of the show.

Weezer, Madonna, Death Cab?

Yet no mention of Daft Punk, Prince, Goldfrapp?

They went on name-recognition alone. Hipster-douche acts get top billing. While a few of those sets were good, many were FAR from the best of Coachella.

This is the downside of listening to pretentious music. It's sometimes played by pretentious twats. I think they thought they were too cool/post-punk: "moshing is so last-decade/century/millenium." Granted, it's no longer a spontaneous expression of angst or whatever (was it ever), but it's fun, especially when your'e listening to frenetic music and buzzing. It's a helluvalot cooler than hardcore dancing in which guys beat up the invisible man. I have no problem with the un-dancing some of the Mars Volta fan/freaks do, but I don't appreciate being told how to enjoy myself either.

I vote for Devo, Kraftwerk and Bauhaus.

Also gonna say Chris Martin was the biggest douchebag ever when he played. First he thanked all the fans for sitting through Bauhaus set while waiting for Coldplay then he wanted us all to take a pic of him on his signal and to do it as a sign of our love for him. fark Coldplay. That is all.

In the last 2-3 years they've really gotten their live show pulled together and they're sounding pretty tight now. But yeah, their live album was crap and I was hesitant going into the show 2 years ago, but they blew the place away.

This. Any Coachella list that does not include the Daft Punk set at all is an utter failure. Seriously.

After watching a few of those, it left me with overwhelming feeling that barricades, 90 security personnel, and 60 feet of no man's land, ruined the modern rock concert.

At which time I'd like to play this. Separation of church and skate (^)

Have to agree. I don't do Coachella, but I've done Bonnaroo 5 years running. The increase in preferential access for VIP (re: rich) passholders is ridiculous. The main stage has a large chunk of real estate blocked off for this purpose. Not that sneaking in is difficult....

List has last year's Arcade Fire set - thus it can never be invalid.

/that show made me happy to be alive, even though I was only watching it through YouTube.
