Hmmm... Subby must not have heard about carjacking...

Wow, I kind of wish I was rich enough to have a car packed with the kind of luxury toys required to input those exploits into the control systems.

For most of us any kind of wireless connectivity is the hallmark of something way out of our price range, I'm not particularly worried about these exploits because getting the exploit into the electronics involves physically hooking something up to the firmware update/monitoring port by the steering column-- and at that point you could just hotwire the car instead and drive off with it.

Is this the car that was advertised with an accompanying iPhone app? The commercial had a situation where the keys were locked in the car, no problem, call dad. Great idea for an honest world, but being app jacked was the first thing I thought of.

When self driving cars become reality, does that mean no more DUI's?

`
No way the Courts/cops are going to let that revenue stream dry up. Hell the car will probably lock you in and drive straight to the nearest police station.

Which is something that comes with expensive cars, not the kind of stuff in the price range of the bottom half of incomes.

Well, correction, not the stuff in our price range for those of us living within our means. After that whole last real estate bubble I guess a lot of us probably have 'em anyhow.

Yup... The Chevy Cruze is such a luxury car... Starts at $16,700 and comes standard with OnStar... as do most of the other GM vehicles.

I am in no danger of buying a car with Onstar.

I hate to break it to you but you can get a Ford Fiesta with all of those bluetooth features for just over $17,000. These features are not just on $80,000 and up luxury cars anymore.

In all fairness, the five gallon tub of caviar is pretty cheap.

They sell a rearview mirror now with OnStar for $300 that supposedly works with any car.

9beers: When self driving cars become reality, does that mean no more DUI's?

No, as legally you can't license the car to drive. While driving assistance technology will allow the driver to only monitor the cars progress the car must have a licensed, sober, driver. It might lower the detection rate of DUI's as the driver will no longer be driving erratically, but sobriety check points will still catch those too stupid to go around them.

It should greatly reduced accidents, speeding tickets, and other moving violations, but will lead to increased taxes as revenue streams from those sources are reduced.

My car was subverted three times last week. Each time I was finally able to stop the car in a strip club parking lot. I then had to kill a couple of hours until the system reset. Stupid app jack, cost me over $300.

I bet your OnStar service doesn't even need to be activated to fall victim to this.

Except that my car will be listening to crowd-sourced warnings about the locations of checkpoints (and locations of all cop cars for that matter) and it will automatically avoid them.

OK, fair enough. Guess I stand corrected.

Tobin_Lam: They sell a rearview mirror now with OnStar for $300 that supposedly works with any car.

While this is cool, that's both rather expensive for a car toy and also not hooked into the firmware, so not really relevant to what we're talking about. The article's talking about features that allow people to remotely access the brakes/engine timer control unit, which is most vehicles requires a hard-wired connection to the maintenance port. The exception being OnStar integrated vehicles (the OnStar unit is hooked into the firmware so they can remotely disable your car if it's stolen, among other things) and vehicles with factory wireless components (some expensive vehicles have wireless redundant bits for brakes, etc). An OnStar transponder stuck on your rearview mirror wouldn't have the same functionality, unless you're wiring it into the maintenance port.

So . . . keep an older car, but make sure it fits on a one-lane bridge?

Hey, I remember that movie. Had some stupid chick cop have her SUV taken over by the bad guy thru her OnStar. Stopped her cold in the middle of the bridge and then locked her in. IIRC, dumb biatch kept driving that same SUV for the rest of the movie.

/don't remember the movies name though

This is why I have a problem with electric power steering and artificial road feel from servos. If it can be controlled by a vicious script kiddie, things could get very ugly very quickly once they figure out a way to send a mass command to all cars of a certain type to either suddenly lock the steering or turn hard left, or whatever.

I drive cars from the 80s so I'm really getting a kick...

But really don't be surprised. Today's cars are giant computer just waiting to be hacked, and when electric vehicles become the norm (in-wheel engines and digital steering) I'm sure we'll be seeing on-the-road carjackings via remote control.

/That and repairing a car today costs a fortune for problems that shouldn't even exist.

Word. Also means you're the designated driver at all times because none of your friends can drive you home in your car. But I'll trade the latter for the former.

Just wait until some asshole teenager figures out that he can remotely deploy your airbag.
