The results are "not entirely surprising given that we are at the back end of the current console lifecycle," said NPD Group analyst Anita Frazier.

That's a retarded analysis.

"These PS3 graphics suck. I'm not playing these awesome new games until they come out with a better console."

It's more like...

"I just bought Skyrim, Modern Warfare 3, Battlefield 3, Arkham City, and Assassin's Creed in November so I can't really justify shelling out money for... *browses December releases* the video game adaptation of Apples to Apples."

Done in one. Picked up Battlefield and waiting for another 6 weeks or so for Mass Effect 3. $120 from HalfAssAssasin and that's about it for me.

Yeah. I was way too busy playing Skyrim and Arkham City to even think about any other games in December. I barely thought about food. In fact, I think I can remember a girlfriend in there somewhere, but it's kind of hazy.

Just remember kids: We spent half of 2011 saying "THAR WHAR NO GUD GAME'S JUST WAIT UNTIL THE GOOD ONE'S COME OUT", then when it comes out that retail in the United States was down eight percent year-to-year, everyone is like, "B-B-B-B-B-BUT DIGITAL DITSRIBUTION!!!"...which takes it to a two-percent loss. The big publishers are going to get the absolute shiat kicked out of them this year. No new game consoles coming out and customers won't believe 2012's holiday release schedule is the "BEST THIGN EVAR!!" even if the industry screams it from the top of their lungs, since they were already told the 2011 release schedule was the "BEST THIGN EVER!!". Let's not forget that these companies operate on exceptionally slim profit margins. A ten percent drop in revenue can ruin one of these companies' stock outlooks. Not much for predictions, but I would expect that one of these companies is gonna go crazy and try something like a first-day digital release with one of their big games. They can't hold off much longer on that.

That's why the major publishers were all stupid for cramming all of their major releases into the same narrow time frame.

I kinda laugh at the suckers who bought Star Wars: The Old Republic. I knew months in advance that it was gonna be another "Bring me ten Jawa hoods" quest grinder, and wow shock and surprise I was right!

I'm still busy with Assassins Creed and Mortal Kombat. Eagerly waiting for the new Hitman.

I was dissapointed that I could not enslave the Jawas, set up a Jawa hood sweat shop and sell them to noobs who needed 10 hoods for their dam quest.

What a useless statistical non-comparison. The article was written by a retarded monkey using sub-standard runny poop. As far as I can tell the numbers they are comparing are ONLY the December 2011 vs. December 2010 sales figures. But that's more or less meaningless unless they ALSO compare the full-year sales figures, so you can tell if this is really a bad thing, or if it's just a natural decline caused by the sales figures peaking at different times. If Oct-Nov 2011 was abnormally high, or if the full-year sales figures are the same or better than 2010, then the December decline is MEANINGLESS. Christ, give it some context or don't write articles.

Yup, Skyrim pwned my gaming time. Not to mention that all through december most of those online merchants had reskinned their sites for the holiday sales in a manner that was annoying to browse.

/plus, nothing of any value was released in December.

Did you bother to do Flashpoints? Pretty unique way of doing instances which hasnt been done before. Plus the game has a much more engaging storyline that builds up to quite the twist by the time you finish the level 50 areas.

But im going to guess you never experienced that since your back playing hello kitty island pandas sucking the blizzard tit.

Also, the economy is even shiattier than last year, I just spent the last of the emergency-emergency money on Christmas, I sure hope I don't actually have an emergency this year.

/actually started coupon clipping for the first time in my life this year, found it oddly addictive.
//not as addictive as Skyrim.

Star Wars The Old Republic.

Right. He said "great" games.

But yeah, re: TFA- contextual comparison lacking, backend of console life doesn't matter when the next gen doesn't have anything resembling a release date, and guess what? If you put out games that give someone 50-500 hours of gameplay, they won't need anything new for a bit. I skipped the new Ace Combat, Arkham City, and something else that I can't even remember since I was busy with Skyrim (and still am, damn 15 daedrics achievement; also F you thieves guild. I don't care about your former glory.)

Now I'm pleased that I can pick up all the games I "missed" at their post-holiday, non-brand-new prices a couple of months after the fact.

Only thing I'm actively looking forward to now is the new SSX game. It's been too long since 3.

Gotta say I agree with you. I'm loving SWTOR. What's more my girlfriend loves it too. She's tried other MMO's, mostly to humour me, but this is the first when where I've seen her go to play when I'm not around. I'm convinced it's because of the story elements of the game.

I've been playing Mass Effect 2 for the past few weeks and I have to say it is probably one of the best games I have played in at least 15 years...probably since FFVII on the PS1. I am not a big gamer (work + wife + kids = no time for gaming) and I am definitely not one to drop $60 on a new release. But I am really considering it when ME3 comes out.

Same here. You can play it like an MMO if you want, or you can play mostly single player like you're playing a regular RPG if you want. Or both. The companion system (and sending them out to do your bidding), the space missions (although not enough of them).

So all in all, fun game regardless of whether you are social or not.

Does Blizzard pay you also? I play Tor alot and it's a fun game. I wish crafting was more along the lines of SWG crafting but the story is really good and since there are so many professions to run the story line through it will take a long time to experience all of them.

The video game industry took double-digit losses going from May through August in order to stack the September through November holiday schedule, which ended up being roughly equal to what it was in 2010, after the entire industry spent all 2011 hyping up their paper tiger release schedule as the best thing the video game industry has ever seen. That's the context. The video game industry screwed the pooch. And as I mentioned above, they're not doing enough business in digital sales to offset the loss in retail sales for the year. Retail was down eight percent for the year. When digital sales were brought into the equation, down two percent. 2012 is gonna be an awful year for them unless somebody strikes it big with a game that we don't know much about or are not expecting to be big.

2012-01-13 01:44:23 PM
And looking back at what I just wrote, it's sad that I can speak of one smash hit in terms that it would be enough to offset a bad year for the rest of the video game industry, but that's what you've got now: A handful of marquee franchises and a bunch of other stuff that nobody wants to play no matter how good it is. Steam is trying to avert the bubble and that's about it. Gotta have more Call of Duty, boys.

Yeah I fear more for the people who play for the story only. Like I mentioned before, even MMO haters can play this game just for the personal story and then quit. Just play on a carebear server if you want to minimize your interaction with the opposite faction.

I'm not grabbing ME3 until there's a save editor to allow me to customize my start. It's not worth it to run another ME1/2 playthrough just so I can see 3 extra lines of dialogue.

/If you liked ME1 and hated ME2, you'll probably hate ME3 based on the beta vids.
//If you liked ME2 , but REALLY don't want to have to play another 30 hour ME1 campaign just to get your preferred start, it's a very simple process to customize ME2 starts.

1) Start ME2 Game.
2) Save ME2 Game.
3) Grab save editor.
a) Set game state to one of the finished states
b) Check "Played Mass Effect 1"
c) Check all the checks of your preferred state. Note that to get Conrad Verner, you have to check all 3 Conrad Verner states (Charm, Intimidate, Died).
4) Import edited save game as new ME2 campaign.

Eh... I sort of contributed. Bought Skyrim at the start of December, then bought a shiatload of games during the Steam sale, for some very good prices. Made the mistake of buying ToR at full price, only to happily unsub from it a few weeks later.

I don't see myself making anymore game purchases until GW2 is released (if that even happens this year)... I have a pretty big list of games to get through at this point.
