Were they looking for Evil Count Montbaln who captured their sister?

How appropriate. They fought like cows.

No, they wanted this guy, and his fine Corinthian leather

Well, you have to admire their balls.

You have to, because their balls are floating right there on the surface, blasted free of their bodies by shrapnel from the rocket fire.

You can't fix stupid...

Mohammed evidently was chewing a bit too much qat that morning.

Those pirates need a few Exocets, and a bigger boat.

2012-01-13 12:06:53 PM
That boat looks like it's made of poured concrete.

Man I'm telling ya, if this was the US of A Navy instead of those wimpy wussy Spani-airds then those dirty pirates would have gotten a very strongly worded letter from us. Then we would have to hold a counsel with all of the world's leaders to make sure we didn't offend anyone with said letter. Then we'd make them US citizens and give them welfare for life.

2012-01-13 12:11:55 PM
Ok, maybe this sounds a bit callous - however, why don't people return fire and sink their ship?

This. I've got no sympathy for them. They know the risks. Sink 'em and let 'em drown. I doubt they'd do any different given the chance.

Are these guys really deserving of the term "pirates"?

I mean, just look at them. These aren't the dreaded scourge of the seven seas like the Barbary Corsairs or Blackbeard fame. These are more like a bunch of rednecks in a leaky motorboat and a handful of weapons.

If I am not mistaken, the last time the pirates dealt with the USN, several of them had spontaneous uncontained brain aneurisms.

The question is, how much copyrighted content did they download before the RIAA and MPAA sent the Spanish Armada after them?

Oh, *those* pirates.

Right? They probably don't even wear eyeliner.

They should have just brought their ship up to flank speed and passed them within a few yards. No shots fired, boat sunk.

Except according to Wikipedia, it's a supply vessel (which is probably why they didn't sink the pirate ship).

0/10 seconded.

Not funny, nobody actually thinks this. Next time try caricaturing Obama as bloodthirsty, not weak. He's big on push-button "military operations" which are a bit like assassinations.

Sink it and use a pool skimmer to dump whichever parts you can find back on the beach. If you put up the vids on youtube, I'm willing to make internet access part of the humanitarian aid package for Somalia.

Well, I for one can endorse having the human decency to over power then, detain them, and to hang them from a yardarm or have them walk the plank. Think of the pay-per-view potential: Action footage of capture, reality show trials, and the execution.
Possible title of the show: Can you swim 500 miles?

Does look like a cargo ship (I guess it basically is one in the service of the Spanish Navy) so the pirates' decision makes a little more sense.

FTFA: In October 2009, a group of pirates attempted to take on the French warship BCR Somme about 250 miles off the coast of Somalia.

They met a similar fate to the pirates involved in today's incident and were detained after their unsuccessful attack.

You mean the French didn't surrender? What's up with that?

It must have looked like a freighter to them, then. Hmm. Pirates attacked a US Navy transport 10 or 12 years ago, with the same result.

It might be time for the Armed Merchant Cruiser to come back in style.

Piracy has lost a lot of its cachet since days of yore. Nowadays it's safer and more profitable to be a politician.

I cannot believe there was anyone to detain after the fact.

If I were the skipper there would be a smoking crater in the ocean where that 1970's ski boat use to be.

A SMOKING CRATER! You heard me.
