I wonder if anyone thought to ask if they were reading Steph Meyer...

sno man: I wonder if anyone thought to ask if they were reading Steph Meyer...

They're teenaged girls, it's just kinda assumed.

Well I was exhibiting Tourette's-like symptoms after about 20 pages...

I feel really bad for whomever had to go in front of that meeting and communicate the results - I can imagine the nearly universal response from the parents was that the school was covering something up and won't someone please think of the children.

Sounds like they brought in just about every single testing agency and medical specialty there is and people really don't want to hear "it's all in their heads".

Which is still less insulting than "They were making it up to get attention."

If I were that offical I'd say "Well we've had reliable reports that Goody Proctor was seen walking the the devil on the last full moon, so we haven't completely ruled out witchcraft yet..."

Glad that this has already been covered.

Since ancient times women considered to be suffering from hysteria would sometimes undergo "pelvic massage" - manual stimulation of the genitals by the doctor until the patient experienced "hysterical paroxysm" (orgasm).

Thank you, Wikipedia.

Wow, we've made it this far without some idiot making a "Tourettes means swearing a lot" style joke. Good times, maybe people are learning what the disorder really is.

I remember many years ago in England there was a "summer of fainting" affecting teenage girls in marching bands, parades, Girl Guide [what girl scouts used to be called in England] gatherings, etc. These groups had no contact with each other and were scattered across the country. And just as mysteriously as it started, it peaked, faded, and disappeared.

Memory says this was in the 1970s (so unrelated to the well-known 1965 incident in Blackburn, Lancashire) but I couldn't find anything more about it online. (The Googles, they do nothing).

/Also, it turns out that the words "teen girls" are on Google's list of searches that it doesn't auto-complete.

Only one or two the girls are actually experiencing any symptoms. The rest are just farking with the school/parents/docs. Fearless predicition: Give it several years and some of them will admit it.

What specifically were they doing? I remember everyone flipping/tossing their hair the same way at the same time in middle school. We could have gone on to be a synchronized swim team but that would have ruined our hair.

THIS. Kids know how to fark with teachers and parents. It is entertaining to them. Unless someone thinks the Salem witch-trial girls were really possessed.

All of the examples of mass hysteria on its Wikipedia page happened to teenage girls... (new window) Why?

Jobbers: All of the examples of mass hysteria on its Wikipedia page happened to teenage girls... (new window) Why?

I'm going to hazard a guess that the author of that page either has a dick or is a dick, perhaps both. On the closely-related page about Mass Psychogenic Illness (new window) you'll find a much more representative sample involving adults both male and female.

While there's no doubt that adolescent girls are most vulnerable to this kind of thing, it's by no means exclusive to girls or to adolescents.

Teenaged girls are the rudest, most foul mouthed, evil creatures on the face of the planet. These girls are no different from the typical teen girl.

FTFA: "girls were more greatly affected"

So unless teenage boys are getting the Gardasil vaccine, anti-vaccers can just sit out on this one.
