Yeah, fuq them for wanting to join the rest of the modern world. I hate when those people get all uppity with their own resources.

It's better than coal. I generally think people overstate the power of 'environmentalists' but they really do need to prioritize their evils.

Let them build nukes like modern societies. Then the rivers can be for radioactive waste.

From last year: Chile approves $7bn hydroelectric dam in Patagonian wilderness

Only three dozen families would be relocated, but the dams would drown 14,000 acres (5,700 hectares), require carving clear-cuts through forests, and eliminate whitewater rapids and waterfalls that attract ecotourism. They also would destroy habitat for the endangered Southern Huemul deer: Fewer than 1,000 of the diminutive animals, a national symbol, are believed to exist.

This initiative has big mining companies and IMF "restructuring program" written all over it.

ANYTHING is better than burning more fossil fuels. I don't understand how "environmentalists" think otherwise. I consider myself an "environmentalist" on health grounds: air particulate pollution is one of the biggest public health menaces out there, with quantifiable costs to anyone downwind that certainly outweigh the known losses caused by other forms of energy production. Well, quantifiable for those who understand how to set up WinBUGS properly and who have access to confidential health data as well as pollution vectors. And there are probably confounding factors that will only arise as more energy comes from renewable resources.

But frankly if there are only 1,000 of those deer left, they probably aren't gonna be too resistant to climate change anyway. Put 'em in zoos while they are still there to be rounded up. It's the only way we will be able to preserve a lot of species.

Chile has some fascinating policies I really love.

For instance if you play the lottery you must put the same amount you gamble into a retirement account, dollar for dollar. This tricks morons who never save for retirement into doing so every time they do something stupid I LOVE IT!

The biggest, most important question;
how will this affect wine production?

That's...brilliant! We'd never get that here though. The old folks would cry socialism while cashing their social security checks.

B-B-B-But Pinochet made those retirement accounts! And they don't pay as well as countries like Greece that promise more money than they can possibly afford to pay!

Overstate? No. No solar power plant in the extremely sunny Mojave desert because of environmentalists. I mean, it's the goddamned desert.

Ah yes.
The world's mafia armbreaker.
Here's the ridiculous loans, do exactly what we say, pay them back or we'll come back and enforce austerity measures and your citizens will have to go hungry, lose medical treatment, and housing.
And if you riot or resist any of our theft of resources from the general pop-er-the debt collection you owe us, shut up nancy, it's all your fault. Even thought the debts were more or less out of their hands, on ridiculous terms, and we're going to impose economic policy on your "democratic" government that doesn't work and that you would never consent to.

There was a bunch of solar panels that were going to be placed in the Mojave, but the environmentalists said it was tortoise habitat, so they couldn't.

/Don't know how it was resolved, because I stopped caring once I didn't have family working at the company that was going to make the panels.

Sounds like it's time for one last trip through... you grab your banjo, I'll dig out my bow and arrows and we'll be off. Don't worry, we'll have you back in your pretty little suburban house in time for the game on Sunday.

MugzyBrown: Chile's economy and government is is better condition than ours.

I don't know. I've been to Chile a few times and they are definitely in good condition. But better than the US? I don't think so. Part of their economic power comes from the reforms implemented by, as I've heard him called, their previous "dik-tator." The other thing they have going for them are their natural resources.
That said, it's still kinda second world there. It's getting better, no doubt, but still no where near the US.

I'm always amazed by the dogs that are everywhere. I was told that the "liberals" made it so that there was no dog catcher/spca. Instead they let the dogs run near wild. I suggested that perhaps they should have a catch, spay/neuter, and release policy which would keep the population down. The answer I got was that it would cost too much money and the "liberals" would hate it.

/Chileans are a conservative lot in my experience. Good folk, great food.

Cracks knuckles, let's see if we can't really make the environuts go crazy this morning...

oil company: We want to make pipeline to move large quantities of oil
environmentalist: But leaking!
oil company: Ok, trains then
environmentalist: But derailment!
oil company: Ok, boats from across the world
environmentalist: But spills!
oil company: Ok, drill more close to home
environmentalist: But fracking
oil company: Ok drive smaller car and less consumer goods like iPhone
environmentalist: ...

/Have fun!

DarnoKonrad: I generally think people overstate the power of 'environmentalists' but they really do need to prioritize their evils.

In some cases, sure. However, never underestimate this power as well.

Take the 4 lower Snake River Dams for example. The Enviros have been trying for years to get these removed with the repercussion of removing about 3 GW of power production (nameplate) from the system all in the name of the salmon and steelhead. As a note hydro supplies about 80% of Idaho's, 75% of Washington's and about 70% of Oregon's power. Also, salmon runs have been very good since 2001. However, this has not stopped the environmentallist from doing everything they can to tear these down.

Yes, what can we do about the greatest evil in the world--treehuggers. Those dams are not going to be removed, and those fine salmon runs are mostly hatchery fish. There isn't a natural salmon run left in the northwest.

cryinoutloud: Yes, what can we do about the greatest evil in the world--treehuggers.

Oh, I don't mind the ones that have a sense of cost v. benifit. It is ideological ones that can't support any mine, log sale or public area grazing, even though they use all of thieir products that I (and most folks) have a problem with.

Those dams are not going to be removed,

They are trying very hard and pouring in millions of dollars to their lawyers to do just that. Ultimately, I hope you are right.

There isn't a natural salmon run left in the northwest.

And this is why folks don't take hippies like you very seriously. Ever heard of the Rouge River? Mabye the Fraser River in Canada? You don't have much of an idea of what you are talking about and it damages the credibility of not only you, but the entire environmental movement.

So close you are not kidding. Locally the energy monopoly wanted to build a huge NG plant, but it would require a pipeline. The usual crowd was screaming and yelling about no pipeline because it was evil. So - the PSC let the company go forward with a couple of giant coal plants - designed to use the dirtiest coal from wyoming because it was cheaper to bring in by rail car. The same people started screaming about how natural gas would be so much cleaner and the response was that since no pipeline was allowed, it had to be coal.So the people that hate everything started to say "Well maybe a pipeline..." and were shot right down because of the years of litigation they caused meant that the plane was years behind schedule before it started and the company was NOT going for yet another many years long delay to make them happy - we were already hurting for power and buying from the grid at a high cost. Not to mention the jobs lost due to the high energy cost causing manufacturers to bail to other cheaper areas.
