Why not, subby? Stuff collapsing on its own happens all the time in Montreal.

The pacing in that book is terrible. Great story, but King could have used an editor. I don't know why the "It" book gets the props that it does because the writing is very sloppy and lazy.

I could have been shorter, yes. But it's creepy -- I suppose that's why. But yes, he's done much better. Duma Key and Under the Dome were pretty cool.

Yeah, it doesn't flow. You get jerked back and forth in time so much it gets tedious. I liked Under The Dome because it went in a straight line, and when it ended, it ended. Cell and The Long Walk are my favorites as well.

I disliked cell. But I really liked It, The Long Walk, Duma Key, Under the Dome, and 11/22/63 among many other of his books. I read It as a kid on family vacation on the drive from Ohio to Florida and back, It really freaked me out.

I read "It" when I was the same age as the kids in that book. The sex scene in the sewers seemed perfectly reasonable to me at the time. Maybe Stephen King understands young teenagers better than we do. I read it now and was dutifully horrified.

Actually, people get killed by tire explosions every year, and if it's a big enough tire (truck, tractor), I could see windows getting blown out happening.

Also, +! for Skeleton Crew

I was around the same age as the kids in the book when I read It too and that scene came off as very out of place even then. The tone went from "YAAAY WE KILLED THE CLOWN MONSTER" to "Oh no we're lost, better gangbang Beverly to get out of here"

Yes, but if that's the case, wouldn't the truck/tractor still be in the vicinity of the blown out window thus eliminating speculation of an explosion?

Cocaine is a hell of a drug.

It don't recall the exact events surrounding the sewer gangbang but I think it was somehow supposed to be they weren't sure if they were going to get out at all and being on the verge of their sexuality decided to have sex in case they never had another chance.

Perhaps it was intended to be somehow symbolic of crossing over into adulthood and the slaying of monsters from one's imagination.

I don't know. Maybe he was just snorting cocaine at the time and thought it made sense.

Both stories had awesome premises, but like you said Under the Dome petered out in a big way. (except for the bomb shelter tangent). The way the characters were so flippantly shiatcanned after I invested (reluctantly) hours in their backstories kind of pissed me off. The cause was a firecracker in the turd. As far as Duma Key is concerned, King always looses me when he introduces psychic story-lines halfway through the book.

That one rocks... I've been a King fan since the mid-80's, not everything is a hit, but I still like his books. That was one of my absolute favorite stories though. Somewhere out there are torrents of the short lied Nightmares and Dreamscapes episodes, and they did that one.

How can it be "lazy" when it's 3 times as long as an book written by another author?

As for the pacing, there are a few spots that drag, but I personally have always liked King's character development, and this is the sticking point with some people. 'It' is a great example. I had a crappy childhood, after about 9 years old, playing with friends ended up being a once-a-month experience, due to an emotionally abusive biatch of an adoptive mother. For a few years though, I had that childhood of exploring and getting into stuff that wasn't exactly safe for a kid, yet I always survived. I could totally relate to the kids in the Barrens when I read 'It'.

Add to that the great character of Pennywise, and I can totally understand why it gets props. Not my absolute favorite(That honor is reserved for 'The Stand'.), but it's in my top 5. In high school, I think I read it in something like 4 days.

The author whose pacing I have issues with s Frank Herbert, to me it's like walking through drying cement with swim fins on and crutches... Tolkein was hard, too, but after watching the movies, I had characters to relate to in T.L.O.t.R., after that, it was a breeze.

See, it all depends on the readers with these.

Why not? A 2 inch thick slab of rubber8 inches across, and God knows how long, embedded with woven steel threads? Throw a tore at your living room window and get back to us... :-)

It's sad that "Rage" is not in print anymore. It's a great story. I understand why King didn't want it out there anymore post Columbine, If only to cover his ass for lawsuits, but I always thought it would make a great stage play. The gunpoint therapy session the kids go through really spoke to me when I read it as a teenager. I have to find my copy of the Bachman books and see if it is still any good to an old man in his thirties. "The Long Walk" needs a revisit too.
