I don't understand how a homosexual could vote for a Republican candidate. Unless they were so stinking rich that that they'd rather have an upper class tax cut than have the same basic rights as everyone else does. Though I would agree that Santorum is the WORST of the bunch in the whole gay rights field.

Yea, but that goes for anyone. Most people who vote Republcian do so at the detriment of themselves and their nation, but it doesn't stop them.

I would agree, but most such people are the ones who dislike gays. The "I hate gays so bad I'll vote against my own interests just to show them!" type.

Well most Gay Republicans I've run into are flaming neoliberals. They're okay with sexuality being a privilege for those that can afford it. The entire Republican party is strange-bedfellows.

Log Cabin Republicans: Because everyone can be convinced to vote against their own self-interest by being fed comforting lies that they will one day be rich.

Funny, I always thought Log Cabin Republicans had Santorum door mats.

Is this the "homosexual agenda" I hear so much about on freerepublic?

Because there's more than one issue in politics, dumbass.

That's like saying "I don't understand how a white person could vote Democrat." Absolutely maximizing every potential benefit to your personal special-interest group is something that only solely guides the voting habits of complete assholes. Don't be a complete asshole, man.

Like he said, unless you're filthy rich, what issue could be more important than your own civil rights?

... or how a woman could vote for a Republican, or how a blue collar worker could vote for a Republican, or how a minority could vote for a Republican, or how a low-income person could vote for a Republican, or how someone with functioning brain cells could vote for a Republican, or...

Not just if you are rich, but if you are of the mindset that you will, or at least could, be rich. That speaks to so much of the GOP base where they vote for people who don't represent the voter. These folks believe that one day they might be in the elite, and when that time comes, they'll be glad they voted against their own interests early on. It's kind of a delusional investment model of political support.

Also, as long as they can shop, work, and chase that dream of financial success, things like civil liberties are secondary. This is a completely different prioritization of life.

Exactly. I was once asked by a Republican friend "Debeo, why are you voting Democrat? You have a job."

Democrats have moved somewhat to the right under Obama. They now take many of the traditional Republican positions that Log Cabin Republicans considered more important than gay civil rights. In order to vote against his own self interest, your Log Cabin voter would now also have to be:

- Anti-contraception, not just pro-life. Romney and other nominees have talked about a "life begins at conception" constitutional amendment that could criminalize widely available types of contraception.
- Anti-tax cuts for the middle class, but pro tax cuts for the very wealthy
- Anti Obama-care, even though many of the provisions were Republican policy ideas

Since the day Obama took office, the stated main purpose of the Republican party has been to make him a one-term president. That's the sort of single issue voting I consider assholish, not fighting for civil rights.

Why would they? Ron Paul believes that states should be able to do whatever they want to ban gays or homosexual acts. Ron Paul supports DOMA too so he also supports ant-gay laws at the federal level.

Romney doesn't support gay rights either. I don't know how Huntsman stands.

The only person who really makes sense to vote Republican is a short sighted 0.5%er with no morals. Everyone else is a dup.

As long as the gays in question are white, if not, I'm afraid Dr. Paul would be the worst candidate.

Devil's advocate: There are some republicans who don't believe that recognising marriage should be a function of government. If you're anti-marriage, it might be very easy to be ambivalent to the Republican party's anti-gay marriage stance.

Jim, you have several Republican candidates openly calling for homosexuality to be criminalized. Most of them have vowed to reinstate don't ask don't tell. Many have called for bans for gays being able to be school teachers or to adopt. And that's still ignoring the gay marriage issue.

Yes, you'd have to be a special sort of dumbass to be gay AND Republican.
