As a Leaf fan, I'd like to take a moment to savour the situation in Montreal.
As a Hockey fan, I'd like to suggest that Ownership needs to step up and fire Pierre Gauthier. He seems to be in way over his head. The only thing he has going for him is a french name. Someone in that organization need to step up and take on the media there too. Something like: "We don't have a french speaking coach because there aren't any good enough, or available, so back the *bleep* off."
As for the topic at hand, Gauthier finally grew a pair, and quickly shipped off a dissenter, but dude, your best player? who is also probably right? Especially when you set up the problem by throwing your coach under the bus?

2012-01-13 10:09:24 AM
Gauthier: "You think we're losers? I'll show you losers."

At least they got a player with a french name back.

My brain processed that as "Flames acquire calamari in swap with Habs." I was very confused.

gauthier is an idiot. but the owners will keep him around a bit longer due to his name. much longer leash here if you are french.
as a bruins fan, even i can't root for stupid moves of my sworn enemy. would rather see two good teams fight it out than 1 completely collapse.

2012-01-13 10:19:39 AM
I have not been in Montréal recently, but the entire "french thing" is wearing thin.
They don't care where you are from, as long as they win.
of course seeing some local talent will boost fan's appreciation, but that is the case with any city.
les habitants will right the ship and win some game soon.

Reminds me of the draft wen people chanted "Wrong Pierre" when he came up to make the pick. Boy were they right though.

The Habs needed size in their top 6 and they got it with this trade.

Shipping out an under achieving small forward with a 6M cap hit was just a bonus.

If that's the case, then why did the management in Montreal feel the need to issue a public apology for hiring an Anglophone coach, and promise to rectify the situation for next season? How can you throw your own coach (whom you just promoted to head coach) under the bus like that?

If I were Randy Cunneyworth, I would quit right now. He'll get a better opportunity somewhere else, and it's certainly not worth the undeserved crap he is getting in the meantime from the most irrational fanbase in sports.

As amusing as Montreal's provincialism might be it would be even more hilarious if there was still a team in Quebec City.
Bring back the Nordiques!

All I can say is this Bruins' fan is enjoying the spectacle that the Canadiens are making of themselves this season...

Cammalleri's comments were spot on, if you ask me. That was the most listless I've ever seen the Habs play the Bruins.

That team has got a lot of talent, too, so I'm not sure why they're playing like a bunch of bums, but I'm enjoying it, anyway. : )

As a Flames fan, I'm a bit conflicted about this trade.

On the plus side, Cammalieri and Iginla play well together and I'm thrilled to have him back. I do like Rene Borque, but his elbow to the head in Washington was an absolutely dumbass thing to do at a time when he was struggling to put up offense.

On the downside, this is the same story we've seen in Calgary time and time again. With 37 games to go, the Flames need to go 22-10-5 to get 96 points which will likely be the absolute minimum for a playoff spot. Now that's not a totally unreasonable record, but it leaves very little room for error. Another four game losing streak and the playoff hopes are pretty much destroyed.

That means another 9th to 11th place finish, the worst possible spot to be in terms of moving forward to next season. The Flames have historically drafted like complete ass, though Sven Baertschi is a recent reason to have hope. If the Flames miss the playoffs, we're going to be in the same boat as the last three seasons with our two key players Iginla and Kiprusoff another year older and closer to the end of their careers.

Well, the "trade to the other team" thing happened in baseball this year to Delmon Young this year. He was traded from the Twins to the Tigers on the bus ride from the hotel to the game. He left the hotel a Twin, showed up to the game a Tiger.

If you ask me the Habs fabs are the ones to blame. When a team fires it's coach, it takes away any excuses the players had. When you basically run the new coach out of town in an uproar before his first game, and as fans you send the message that you expect and want the coach to fail, well there you go, you're handing those excuses right back to the players. Why should I listen to this guy? Worst I've seen the Habs play in quite awhile last night. You could easily tell half of them don't give a shiat. And the biggest don't-give-a-shiatter is still on the team in Scott Gomez. Let's just show up and collect our paycheck, because the guy to take the fall is going to be the new coach or the guy that speaks up on it.

Anyways,

Montreal needs to fire everyone (Cunneyworth and Gauthier), scuttle the team, and start over.

But as a Leafs fan, I'm happy to watch them flop like a fish.

Doug Flynn was traded to the expos at shea stadium back in 1979 after taking batting practice for the mets, within an hour later, he was swinging with the away blue expos jersey at the cages to the shock of his ex teammates who did not know he was exchanged.

I agree that Cammalleri will probably rebound back to the 30+ goal scorer that he is. But shipping out a "dissenter" makes sense, especially when the team needs a huge change and it'll save you ~$3M in cap hit.

Also, for what it's worth, Cammalleri was a key factor in Martin being fired. He was rumoured to be among the handful of players that would openly tell Martin to shut the fark up during practices. No idea what the relationships are like with Cunneyworth, but I can't imagine there's much respect for authority given the state of management on the team.

Then you must have been reading another statement. It merely said that circumstances forced them to hire an Anglophone coach but they will, given time in the offseason, correct the situation and hire another coach who is (at least bilingual) fluent in French.

If you were Randy, you would stay because this idle crap would not get to you. besides believing in yourself and the simple fact that he has a job to do.

That's a load of crap. His employer just said he was the best they could do on short notice and they don't really intend to keep him in the long term. If your boss issued a farking press release saying that you'd quit on the spot.

As time has gone on, Flames fans truly have to question what the worst Calgary-Toronto trade is of all-time.

Obviously Gary Leeman for Doug f*cking Gilmour sticks out as the most ridiculous trade in Flames history.

But the Phaneuf deal isn't far behind. Good f*cking lord, Matt Stajan is the most useless f*cking player I have ever seen and I'm counting Cory Sarich in that mix.

First off, Cammalleri was right in what he said. An argument can be made that he shouldn't have made it public, but it's not like it isn't obvious. If the team was pissed at him, they need to prove him wrong.

As for the trade, it's hard to say who got the better of it. Both of the featured pieces are underachieving. Cammy's got the higher upside, but also the higher contract, which is starting to look brutal. Montreal dumps what obviously became a pariah with a big cap hit, and gets a decent, if humble, return. Nothing great, of course, but you can't expect much for how Cammy has been.

What strikes me most about this is why Calgary is taking on that cap hit while giving up future assets. It is like they've gotten so used to being a 9-12 seed that they want to do it for the next few years, as well. They already had the weakest prospect pool in the league, and now they've saddled themselves with a big contract in a desperate hope that he can be what he used to be and help propel them into the playoffs. Those are long odds. I understand the Flames not wanting to blow it up and go into rebuild mode, but sooner or later they are going to have to realize that they're just spending a lot of money for mediocrity.

You are aware that, were it not for him being initially hired by the Habs, Julien would never have made it into the NHL? I really despise the French-language-first assholes in this city, but the Canadiens tend to be the only team to produce French-speaking coaches.
On the other hand, I really want Cunneyworth to succeed and stick it to the whingers.

I was in Montréal during the 1993 run, and remember Leeman on the team then.

My friend who work security at L'stade Olympic during the early 1990's, said a lot of Hab players were screwing around, so Coach Demers enforced curfews and early morning practices. then bar tenders started telling the same stories about the infidelity on the team with wives involved. The media never reported anything, because Montréal is a liberated place were sex is not so taboo and who really cared? i didn't.
