There's a 200 yard bridge outside Providence RI (Pawtucket River Bridge) that is 160 past due and now has to be taken down and started over because the ibeams didn't line up. USA - USA!

Um, right. Anyone who's spent even a little time in China knows that you probably wouldn't want to test the earthquake resistant nature of this place no matter what the official line is. That whole corruption and shoddy construction thing is just too often at work.

Why is it that just because the Chinese PR machine said so everyone believes that their hunky dory version is the way things are there?

I am working on Chinese Nuke plants, I am desperately hoping there are exceptions, but fearing this isn't it.

You're welcome to book the first room subby. I'll take my chances in this rickety hut over here.

Was it cheap and fast, or was it good and fast?

The entire hotel costs a total of US$17 million to build

Yeah, maybe next time.

/pick two

How much time did it really take if you include the making/delivery of the pre-fab pieces?

2012-01-13 01:35:38 PM
Sure you might be able to build a 30 story earthquake resistant building in 360 hours but can you have Hooters girls with bra sizes bigger than an A-cup?

Didn't think so.

2012-01-13 01:36:11 PM
Yes, China seems like a reliable source of information.

2012-01-13 02:22:37 PM
The key to achieving such stunning speed is an innovative construction technique cheap-ass labor.

Jiang said that the company might be able to construct similar buildings in 200 hours once workers become more skilful cheaper.

Doesn't concrete take time to cure properly?

2012-01-13 02:43:26 PM
Not that impressive. Everything is pre-fabbed off-site, and they have a huge amount of labor bolting the thing together. Take into account how long it took to prefab everything, and the amount of time will be much less impressive.

Don't believe every claim the Chinese make, especially as it regards to quality.

/sorry Chinese farkers, your folk built their own reputation for cheapness.

BKITU: Was it cheap and fast, or was it good and fast?

There's no such thing as good and fast. Also, CHINA. It's probably made from cardboard and the bones of executed criminals, held together with watered down paste.

Sure there is. It just won't be cheap.

FAST/GOOD/CHEAP

You may have any two.

I hope they bought their sheetrock from the USA.

FYI - you can't build a five-star hotel. The building itself is a relatively minor part of the rating.

2012-01-13 07:06:53 PM
I think the correct word should be "assembles" not "builds"...

2012-01-13 07:28:37 PM
Do they deliver?

2012-01-13 09:04:28 PM
This thing is actually just a proof of concept for the main course, which will be a 660 meter (or so) skyscraper that will hold like 100,000 people, that they say they will build over the course of six months. Of course everyone was laughing about that until a couple of months ago when they did the 15 story and then the 30 story one. Now there is a bit of a tendency to not doubt them.

I saw the video of the earthquake test...it looked surprisingly solid.

2012-01-13 09:15:58 PM
it didn't take 6 days. It looks like most of that was prefab. it took six days to stack it all up and connect all the prefab units. not saying the work is shoddy or quality work, just that it didn't take 6 days to build if you actually consider all the "pre-work" done prior to the work done in the video.

2012-01-13 10:01:24 PM
They're just faster because they have smaller hands, so they work faster.

Calling your building "earthquake-resistant" seems like a good way to jinx it.

You can build a business from the ground up.

Will it be abandoned within a matter of years like so many of China's massive testaments to conspicuous capitalism?

2012-01-14 10:26:30 AM
Ah-hem!!! you meant Communist China, right???

as long as the Communist Party holds the power, its Communist China, not China.

oh, i forgot, when American companies want to exploit cheap communist chinese labor and send American jobs overseas, then suddenly its just plain ole' China, right.

my bad, you'll have to pardon my ignorance. silly me. oh, did i mention that Communist Chinese workers don't pay American taxes????

nobody, but nobody can bullsh*t as well as this Nation can. we are the world's premier bullsh*t exporters.

and soon, Communist China will own the good ole' USA. but as long as our American company stockholders can scrape more cream of the top by exploiting cheap communist chinese labor, its A-OK!!!

But seriously, moduler construction is rather good at two things, being cheap to put up and beaing cheap to take down.

2012-01-15 01:03:12 AM
THIS (new window) was my experience in a "4 Star" hotel in China.

I'd be surprised if one built in 360 hours actually remains intact after a further 360 hours.
