Had this older generation dentist give me a check up while home on vacation. He filled what he claimed to be 6 cavities. The resin he used to fill them, well, he didn't grind it down so every time I bit, it hurt like hell. Said my bite would eventually grind it down and to not worry about it. Two months later I wake up to a swollen cheek that closes my eye. Got to MY dentist who literally said, "WTF?? You never had any cavities!" after viewing my mouth x-rays from a few months prior. Almost admitted to the hospital, had to take antibiotics and hydrocodone for a week. School sucked that semester.

Untrained people performing dental work is more common that you'd think. I have worked for charities that provide vision and dental care to the poor, and one of the things that successfully recruited dentists for us was showing them articles like this one. I remember one article about a guy in Atlanta using regular household tools in his work. Scary stuff.

He would assuage prospective patients by showing them his dental plaque.
