Since this thread seems to have attracted skating enthusiasts:

Is his flipping technique common, where all board rotation (720 yaw, 720 roll) comes from that one flick of his right foot? I always pictured kickflips done with the lead foot, or at least from contact between the trucks. I understand it has to change when you're not spinning with board, but that flick of the toes seemed pretty damn finessed.

Also, nomenclature question: assuming it's possible to perform a double kickflip while engaged in a snowboard-style 720 (i.e. your body spins 720 degrees of yaw as your board does), is there a different name for that trick than this one?

Is it just me or is it more entertaining to watch a skateboarder smash his nuts on
a hand rail than what that guy did in the video?

In a standard kickflip the flip and board levelling is done with front foot only. Back foot should stay in the center to keep the boarding heading straight. In a trick like this the backfoot absolutely helps propel the 720 portion of it as it spins. The back foot provides the smash down that propels the board up. If you keep your rear foot centered the board should travel straight ahead (in theory). If you put your rear foot on the left side of the tail and stomp it will shove the ass end of the board to the right, if you put rear foot on right side it goes left. If you want to see some awesome example click the link below. At the about the 22-25 second mark you'll see his rear foot push down right on the right corner of the tail sending it to the left as his front foot provides the flip.

Varial Kickflip (new window)

Skateology at youtube (see above) has all kinds of technical tricks slowed down from different angles. Very sick.

In regards to the above trick...it is sick as fark. In regular motion it isn't easy to tell. In that slow motion watch how high he and the board gets, watch where he re-sticks he feet to it. That isn't luck. There are a lot of stoned ding-dongs riding skateboards and calling each other 'duder' a lot. But these are the people I think of when I argue with people that claim skateboard isn't a sport, or an art. Most people can't stand on a skateboard on a flat sidewalk with no movement. I always want them to think of stuff like this when they stand on a skateboard on carpet and still windmill their arms for balance.

I would describe it as a 720 ollie double kickflip. Hoping that ollie after the 720 shows the 720 is attached to the ollie/body and not the board. Though it might take some hand motions and a bro/dude/man or two.

I hope I answered either of your questions with answers that matched what you were asking.

a 360 flip, you do the kickflip part with your front foot and the 360 part with your back foot.

The kickflip rotation (roll) comes from the flick of his front foot where most of the spin rotation (yaw) comes from his back foot. It's the standard way to perform those tricks, and it would be done the same way if done individually: The kickflip with the front foot, the yaw rotation, which is called a Shove-It, with the back foot.

When it comes to naming, everything that happens gets combined into the name. Per your example, the trick would have a new name. What would happen with the body rotation is the rotational direction would be added to the front of the trick name. To make an easy example, a single kickflip with a 360 degree rotation of board only is called a 360 Flip. It would become a Frontside 360 Flip or a Backside 360 Flip depending on the direction the body spins.

That is kind of what I looked like when I used to skateboard.

The only minor difference is instead of landing it I would just smash my head into the ledge.

After living in San Diego for years, I lost count of how many skaters I saw faceplant off of curbs and send their boards flying across an intersection just to get crushed by a car.

Oh, I also saw Tony Hawk and his kid snowboarding at Summit.

So .... this reminded me of a thought I had earlier.

To get to the mailboxes in our neighborhood, you have to go through a large segmented parking lot. The parking lot is split into three groups with the middle segment the one that needs to be bypassed to reach the mailboxes. Anyway, we have about 15-20 young skater kids that set up, do their thing, and hang-out in the middle parking lot -- every friggin day.

The kids are nice enough (albeit a little high-strung), but for the life of me I can't figure out why they set up on one of three identical parking lots where they have to move their shiat Every Single Time someone drives over to get the mail. The behavior is so strange, I've really wanted to ask them -- but I don't want to present the front of A Guy in His Car Rolling Down the Window to Lecture Kids (I remember that guy). So, any theories from the skate crowd on this one?

Best I can figure, it's so they can get an audience for their "rebel skater" schtick.

Wicked. Also, check out his right foot at 1:01, he kind of "stubs" his toe on the side of the board.

I'd guess you have a mixture of goofy and regular foot skaters who want to approach the curbing from both front and back sides. Being in the middle would allow all of them to do so more easily. I'm picturing the center layout as being between two forms of islands or other curbed structure. And they may want to be visible but it's probably not meant to be rebellious.

Loved that.... I never get tired of watching skate videos, maybe because it's something that I admittedly have absolutely zero natural talent for (and have broken bones and scars to prove it after years of persistence in my youth).

Really though, if that was a Mullen vid (new window), he would have reached down and reversed the boards direction before landing it :)

Darkslides aren't that difficult. I can do them, as well as most kids at the park these days. The thing is no one wants to because it ruins your grip tape.

I've never understood this. Have you never seen slow-mos outside of skateboarding? Is this effect that uncommon? I might be accustomed to it but I love that the skateboarding community almost always verbally pays respect to skillful tricks. I don't find slow motion praise funny at all. How does it take away from a trick?

Did you even watch the video? Particularly at the end, it sounds EXACTLY like a half-dozen cows are in the background, moo-ing and lowing away. It's uncanny.

And yes, I've seen plenty of slow-motion video replays outside of skateboarding. Most of them don't have guernseys and beeves cheering the stars on.
