No, a professor at my undergrad straight up murdered their colleagues too. Tried to take out a whole room of them in fact.

Today was the last day of the American Astronomical Society conference, and while I never met Steve several of my colleagues were friends with him and we were all shocked to hear about his death. That was before we heard that someone had been arrested.

I mean this is astronomy, not exactly like we're a field known for much crazy behavior.

A real tragedy within the field too as he was head of the Square Kilometer Array initiative in Europe (basically the next generation radio telescope) as well as a few other important projects. You know, in case someone here is a geek and wants to know why this tragic death is such a blow.

RIP

Yeah.... no normal people will agree with this sentiment. Not in part or in whole. You farkers up in your observatories are frickin' weird,as a rule.

Andromeda: this tragic death is such a blow.

This we can all agree upon, however.

I meant in the going off the handle illegal sense of crazy. Scientists might be rather weird, but I assure you the slightest suggestion to break an inane little rule will probably get you looks of horror. An actual law just plain doesn't happen, I've never heard of a professor of this caliber being murdered before for a good reason.

Again, no. I used to major in physics and I've met a lot of scientists over the years. Astronomers and chemists were the weirdest. Of course, I only say that because I find physicists who stay up for days at a time only to crash and burn and wake up with no idea what they were working on in their creepy office decorated with comic book characters to be normal.

Also, a lot of scientists break big laws because "They don't apply to me." Have you ever read anything by Fienman about his time working on the bomb? He committed HIGH TREASON because he was bored. But he luckily knew the only guy who could turn him in and talked him down.

I am honestly not surprised it was an Indian professor that murdered him, every Indian tutor and lecturer I've ever had always looked about two paces from snapping. Must be their whole "dog eat dog" education mentality.

Granted, I do Computer Science and anyone that teaches it is more apt to fall asleep than kill someone.

Please let them work this in to the Big Bang TV show ----

Raj wipes out the rest of the cast in a argument over darkmatter and string theory -- The End

( on a side note I personally would want to see the Theoretical physicist who came up with " the great infinite negative sea " Tortured . something about that all electrons were suppose to fall in to it because of entropy, and the reason they have not was "the infinite sea" was full , at that point I tossed the book across the room and pledged my life to see that man driven from the realm of civilized men to live out his life on an uncharted island eating larvae and coconuts , but I think he is dead already , and forgot his name , and tossed the book so that whole revenge thing kinda got swallowed up by lazyness procrastination and apathy .

What ever --- Big Bang Theory Sucks!

Not only that, he came up with these pseudo-mathematical functions that aren't really functions and even thought there was some sort of parallel matter that could destroy regular matter. Real kook.

Mostly academics just carry deep grudges for years and years (if not decades) and take any opportunity they can to screw with people when they have the chance. At least that's what I've seen - and it's mostly the do-nothing douchebags who stopped doing research 20 years ago.

As they say, the fights are so vicious in academia because the stakes are so low.

Seventeen years in academia, and I can attest that grudges and slights--real or perceived--can get out of control. I once had a colleague who refused to speak to me for years because, as he finally told me when I asked, "When I was denied promotion, you were not sufficiently outraged."

Well now. There you have it. I just feel sorry for his wife.

I didn't attend Oxford, but have been there for work related things, and the intensity (and eccentricity) there is off the charts.

Also, I was told there would be no math. . .

True, but whenever I hear about these academic slights I always have to ask just how much more often they occur in academia than in the rest of the world. Anecdote is of course not the plural of data.

I don't remember hearing about that incident. Thanks.

The fall-out from the Concordia shooting was widespread. Some of his allegations (fiscal irregularities and authorship conflicts) were founded and I'm sure that didn't scratch the surface (3 presidents since 2007 and 5 vice-presidents in 5 years is suspect).

In fairness, Fabrikant still makes news headlines every couple of years or so. Despite his incarceration, he publishes his opinions through intermediaries (his wife and son supposedly). Have a look in the comments (new window). It's narcissism at its finest.
