That's capitalism, supply and demand.
Grow food for the locals? fark that, that's not what the markets want, let's make something more profitable at the expense of allowing the workers to live comfortably or eat regularly.

Because "communism" is just a euphemism for "state capitalism" now. Instead of individuals or corporations privately controlling capital, it's the state bureaucrats controlling the capital.
Communism is according to ability, according to need. When a worker hands a fellow worker a wrench to fix something without charging him first, when a guy bums a cigarette from another smoker, even in the dinner parties of the rich where they share amongst each other as equals, that's communism. Capitalism on some level is always built on a baseline of communism to support it and exploits that to make it more sustainable or profitable for the ones who run it at the top in the top-down hierarchy the same way it uses reforms and welfare programs to appease those who would otherwise be harmed by it or the same way it skates on the unpaid labor of domestic work.
The market and the state go hand and in hand whether you're in China or America. The closest thing to "true communism" would be the various autonomous zones, and even those are an impoverished model because they're isolated (to some degree) spots and blips in a globe colonized by the market, the state, and their logic everywhere.

The crowd around Apple's main Beijing store diminished after police lifted the cordon and the doors remained closed. Some waited a while longer for a chance to buy the phone, which includes voice recognition software that doesn't work with Mandarin, before giving up.

Can one of the resident Apple fanboys explain why an iPhone 4S is worth buying at all, much less waiting for days for, without Siri? Are there other features that distinguish it so much from the iPhone 4?
