Going to 5th specialist tomorrow because it might be lupus. Funny how on House it's never "I've had this for 3 years and you're the 8th person they've sent me to."

Yeah it took my mom years and lots of different doctors to figure out what's going on and they still don't really know. What they do know is that antimalarial drugs help keep lupus suppressed. They just don't know why.

House is the stupidest show that has come out in years. I mean they almost kill the patient 3 times in every episode by trying some treatment that they should have never used and then 1 out of 3 of them die anyway.

Lupus is such a weird disease that manifests itself in so many different ways. In my mom it makes all of her joints ache to the point where she can't move, but in her friend it made all of her teeth fall out. Since it can attack any system in the body I guess I'm just glad it didn't attack something vital in my mom.

My elderly mother was tentatively diagnosed with lupus, then COPD (horrible gagging coughs all day) and some other stuff, then she went back home to Florida and saw her allergist, who correctly diagnosed .... and I am embarrassed to say this, but the symptoms are gone now ...

Yeah, got sent to an allergist first, even. Wish it was something as easy as an allergy. Two biopsies and forgot how many hospitalizations. Mine's a malfunction at the cellular level. Get to suck on oxygen so my cells don't starve. It's a bloody joy is what it is. Best part is the idiot neighbors home diagnosing me with everything from allergies to having an upset aura...or something.
Or the people who see a relatively healthy looking person in a wheelchair sucking O2 and assume I've given myself lung cancer smoking.

I was very lucky diagnosis-wise, as the first specialist I saw was a rheumatologist of national repute. I got an appointment to see him entirely by a fluke, too - I was at work and had just phoned and gotten my test results from my primary care doc, who said "could be arthritis, you should see a specialist" and gave me a few names. I hung up the phone and my nosy co-worker asked "What did he say?" When I mentioned "rheumatologist" the temp that was filling in for our receptionist piped up "My best friend works for a rheumatologist, I'll give you his number." I called and he was able to see me the next day due to a cancellation. That was in March 1989; he passed away in 2003 and I still miss him. So far haven't found a rheumy who not only knew his stuff but was also compassionate and truly cared for his patients. (And yes, Lupus sucks.)

Yeah, no kidding. For being a diagnostics specialist, House makes a ton of mistakes every episode.

I was just thinking today when in 2002 I was diagnosed with traits of Lupus. For a week I was unable to brush
my hair, put clothes on, and do simple tasks. Got fired from my job because I couldn't do my task because the root problem was a flare-up.
My grandmother suffers everyday and it makes me sad. Hope something is done soon.

OK, Farkers with Lupus symptoms.. My wife had serious lupus symptoms, high ANA levels, hair falling out, joint pain, bumps on her fingers, -- she was taking plaquenil, major vitamin D, all sorts of medicine.
We were seeing the rheumatologist once a month, watching her symptoms get worse-- it got so bad, our sewer line clogged and when I fixed it, the clog was massive ball of her hair she had been losing. She was literally falling apart. It was very rough-- very scary-- she was progressing fast and nothing anyone could do, prescribe, explain, was helping--
She no longer has to take plaquenil and only goes to rheumy once every six months who is puzzled her symptoms literally disappeared.
We now drink juice. We juice everything, dont eat red meats, no gluten for her, but tons of juice-- massive amounts of vegetable and fruit juice. We buy them from restaurant supply houses and drink the shiat out of freshly squeezed juice every day.
And she gets the yeast out of her colon cleansed via colonics once every two months. Read about yeast in colons causing weird symptoms-- she no longer has any symptoms of any auto immune disorder. Just saying.

I'm glad it wasn't lupus! My husband and my three children all have symptoms of gluten intolerance to varying degrees, and it took years of tests, doctor visits, meds and gluten free trials to get everyone straightened out. In some cases it took weeks for the symptoms to go away, and in the case of my youngest her symptoms were gone in about two days.
Their symptoms were pretty varied and none of them really matches a classic celiac. Funny thing is, after years of these symptoms, a couple of which required daily meds, not one single doctor ever suggested gluten intolerance. It's just not how they think, I guess. It's awesome that your mom was diagnosed.

I was once discussing my kids' gluten issues with my dad and he kinda wondered out loud whether that was my problem when I was a kid. I hadn't thought about it in years, but I used to get severe stomach aches and headaches when I was a kid. it never would have occurred to me till he brought it up, but I think a lot of us have likely had problems in the past but since no one knew what the hell celiac disease or gluten was, they never would have tried a gluten free diet.
My aunt has had symptoms her entire adult life and only in the past few months realized that she felt better when she didn't eat wheat,
In short, the gluten thing has to be largely about awareness. Can't even begin to guess what's up with the peanuts.

I get the joy of an allergist if I break out in hives one more time. Not sure why three is the magic number but it is. Nothing has changed in my home, same foods, same soaps, same everything. Last month I woke up to hives the size of saucers on the back of my legs, smaller hives spread out over the rest of my body. Joints hurt, like walk like an old arthritic woman stiffness. Then my hands swelled and I couldn't make a fist. Went through the antihistamine script and steroid script and symptoms went away slowly. Week after steroid script gone, woke up covered in hives again, same round of meds this time. They are weird hives too. I got hives when I discovered a penicillin allergy, right before I started having problems breathing, they were kinda squishy. These hives are hard, more like giant knots and they itch and burn. I don't really want another break-out when this round of meds end but I'm kinda curious as to whats causing it at the same time.

You've probably heard this already, but jus in case you havent... Celiac disease has a particular accompanying rash known as dermatitis herpetiformis. You may want to google it, just to see if it looks familiar?

I also have lupus, so I'm getting a kick... yeah, not really.
Lucky for me (I guess?), my tests were off the chart the first time 'round. No waiting for a diagnosis here. And Plaquenil worked eventually, but took six months, during which time I dropped to 89 pounds and nearly lost my job. Excitement!

As the kid of someone who's had Lupus since before I was born, Lupus sucks.
My mom is a successful career woman after raising two awesome daughters. She walks 5-15 miles a day, travels around the country, and is one of the strongest people I know. Her Lupus has been a horrible thing for her, but she is an amazing person with or without it.
If you or someone you know has Lupus, make sure you contact someone in your area to be your advocate. Even if all they do is listen and understand when you're too tired to get out of bed, or when you're becoming BFFs with the ER staff, that's an important thing to have.
