(CNN) Stupid Romney: any focus on the massive wealth gap is just "envy." He then proceeded to consume a kilo of beluga caviar in front of a homeless man, pausing to burble, "Ugh. I don't know if I can finish this"   (money.cnn.com) divider line 207

this whole "envy" thing is going to come back and bite him in the ass during the general. the ads just make themselves: shots of people lined up for unemployment, contrasted with romney repeating his "envy" claim.

it's his "let them eat cake."

He has like fifteen of those by now. There's the whole "corporations are people too" thing, the "I know what it's like to be afraid of losing my job" one, posing for a pretty stupid picture, etc. This one moment hardly seems to change anything.

"I think it's fine to talk about those things in quiet rooms..." is a rewording of "there should be no public discourse on these matters"

I'm surprised the conservative mentality of "I got mine, fark you!" plays as well as it does in this country.

Vodka Zombie: I'm surprised the conservative mentality of "I got mine, fark you!" plays as well as it does in this country.

That's not a Conservative mentality. What is more accurate is "I got mine, go get yours." We live in a country where a poor black boy can grow up to be a rich white woman and still make millions after being dead. What a country!

you mean like romney "got his" by growing up the son of a multimillionaire and going to the best schools and having every door open to him?

I don't think it will in the long run. Say what you like about the Occupy Wall Street movement, but the one thing they did do was bring said discussion out into the open. The more people who can't make ends meet, the more people who won't buy into a millionaire essentially saying "you are jealous of ME."

So Romney is trying to be a trollface meme now? "U jelly, bro?"

Actually, Mittens, it's not so much that I envy your wealth - sure, I'd love to have it, but hey, so it goes. No, what I actually do envy is that the system is incredibly rigged in your favor. I'm not even doing that badly for myself, and yet the government would crush me like a bug if I tried some of the crap you and your companies have been pulling for the past 50 years.

Hell, Mittster, you probably have, what, 200 times as much money as me? Probably a lot more, I dunno, really, but let's call it that. Now what if I walked down to Skid Row and starting talking to the folks there, who have about two hundred times less than what I do. What do you suppose would happen if I started telling them all about how not only are they not allowed to envy me, that they're bad people for dragging me down by forcing me to pay taxes to support them in their lavish lifestyles?

How about if I advance that "job creator" theory? Tell them that hey, I have enough money to hire them to do some work, so therefore they shouldn't even think about asking me for any kind of help? I'm not *gonna* hire them, but I could, you know, so don't you go asking me for a handout. In case I change my mind.

Apparently when you say these things, it gets you elected. If I said them, I'd get killed.

Osomatic: Actually, Mittens, it's not so much that I envy your wealth - sure, I'd love to have it, but hey, so it goes.

The problem is he and his ilk are so delusional, they think we sit around envying them, instead of trying to get one extra bill out of our last paycheck, or checking job boards for some side work (or a better job, or a job -- period). That we look upon them with envy rather than thinking "how am I going to feed my family properly this week?" or "I wish I could go to the dentist, but I can't afford it..."

I don't have time to envy their money. Like you said, it'd be nice, but most of us are just trying to make it on our own... in a system that is rigged against us. Hence, our anger. I don't want it just handed to me, but I'd at least like opportunities to get ahead.

That's the same feeling I get when I see Mitt Romney. An instant visceral disgust.

If Mittens thinks others are just envious, I propose an experiment.

For one year, one of his sons is cut off from the family and all influence. He has to go find a job on his own, with absolutely no help whatsoever from Daddy or Daddy's friends. A down payment and one month rent on a very modest apartment will be provided. The rest is up to him.

Let us see how the little preppie maggot does without being handed everything to him the way his father was.

FTFA"I believe in a merit nation, an opportunity nation where people by virtue of their education, their hard work and risk taking and their dreams -- may be a little luck -- could achieve great things,"

Education helps but you go into a whole lot of debt obtaining it. And when you get out-its declared worthless because you didn't commit to a masters or a PHD.

The U.S. laborer is one of the most productive work force...but instead the work goes to the lowest price.

Risk taking- HA! Most Americans are just trying to survive, let alone have enough extra income to "take a risk"

A little luck? There's a whole lot of risk involved...

You'd have to go back and take away the educational and social opportunities already afforded them for it to be a fair experiment.

They, much like I, will always have a head start because of that; most people don't.

Thanks, Dad.

I know, we could trade some homeless black guy for that kid's spot, and bet ONE dollar on the outcome, it would make a great movie even!

The problem with Romney is that besides being a pandering halfwit, he's amazingly stupid. He doesn't actually believe the crap he says; he just spouts it because he thinks it's what Republicans want to hear. He's missing the fact that whenever guys like him talk about "Class Warfare", it sounds an awfully lot like Hitler blaming the Jews for WW2. He's honestly so completely clueless that he doesn't understand that America is all about rooting for the Underdog. Even his fellow Republicans have been shredding him for his moronic, tone-deaf, "You're all just ENVIOUS because I have sixteen mansions while you just got evicted from your home" line of bullshiat.

This statement only testifies to his complete lack of connection with the lower and middle class family. Both my parents are college educated and extremely hard working but "luck" ie, connections that come from being born into wealth, has never been with them. Those words are practically spit in my parent's face.

not for nothing but the friend of mine growing up who had the most wound up a job to job bum drinking his life away. The rest of us who are the children of cops, a teacher, a security guard, a few county administrative clerk types, a golf course groundskeeper and housewives are all rather secure. Some of us quite a bit more than secure.

Romney and McCain. The sad thing is either one of those would have made a much better president than Bush.

Oh well. Not as good as Obama though.

Even then, it wouldn't be equal. He is a white, healthy, male, that has prefect credit and an education.

He has opportunities that other simply wouldn't get.

im not doing too poorly, and yes, there are tons of folks with an entitlest attitude in this country, but the problem is that corporate and rich peoples greed has forced many other, previously hard working people to the edge of oblivion. thier jobs are drying up as corporations outsource and many are enduring a greatly dimished standard of living due to that greed. we have given the rich man and corporations too much of a break for far too long. its time for a flat tax with no write offs. they take a chance and lose, they dont get to write it off. with the middle class shrinking due to thier hijinks, who is gonna fund this country?

I actually agree with his "merit-based" thinking. That's kinda what we're supposed to be doing in this country.

But the rest of what he said? Not only will it bite him (as it should), but my feelings were summed up so very well by others:
