Yeah, I gotta say this is pretty weak sauce. The GOP has many problems, but "betting on anything", British style, is not something I can get worked up over.

Personally, I can understand it as well.

Let's face it. Wildfires happen every year, and burn enough acres that were I to guess, I'd likely under-estimate.
Let's see: My guess: 1M Acres. Survey says: more than 4M acres

In addition, I do not recall a year where there were no homes burned, no firefighters killed, etc... The problem is just too huge. Also, no one individual has so much control as to manipulate things such that they could win.

When I read the headline, I heard it in Tom Bodett's voice. All the headline needed to be complete was a mournful "The end."

I can't tell, is Sarah Laskow hot? Her picture is too small. I care about this about as much as I care about the story. Which is just enough to post an offhand comment about it. So I COULD care less, but I won't bother to.

THIS.

There are certain lines of work where the office humor is extremely dark - anybody in middle-school or high-school education, media, politics or first-responding, to name a few.

I applaud the Republicans for challenging the "heartless bastard" stereotype they're so unfairly saddled with.

No worse than the many, many death pools available to join at any given moment. If it were the actual congresspeople I would care, but these are just bored kids. These days wouldn't you be looking for excitement and joy anywhere you might find it if you had to work closely with the House GOP?

Doesn't it also help identify who is good at predicting what may happen (e.g. impact of fires, extent of damage, etc)?

I dunno, I guess it looks unprofessional, but it's not like they're out there fanning the flames to win. I don't see any problem.

shiat people at my work had one of those lists were you win by the most famous people who die on your list that year. Forget what those are called. You also needed like someone 40 or younger excreta on your list it had lots of rules. it was pretty sophisticated.

Acres Burned 2011 year 8,706,852

how do you even guess at such a number (without having to get a figure from google like me)?

girl is cute

don't care if they have on a pool on that

yes repubs are dicks - like we didn't know that already

Isitoveryet: Acres Burned 2011 year 8,706,852

Well, given that they're in the industry, I'd go with looking at the previous couple years, the average, make my best guess as to whether next year is going to be hot or cold, wet or dry, changes in the amount of burnable acres, changes in firefighting capacities, then make a WAG.

4M average, 8.7M last year, next year is supposed to be hotter, but also more wet, and the firefighter's budgets got slashed in many areas.

7.3M is my guess. There's fewer acres ready to burn, the hotter but wetter year is a wash, but with fewer firefighters and less equipment they'll tend to burn more area before coming under control. 2011 was a really big year though, compared to the average, so next year is likely to be a bit lower.

Oh yeah, once you get all that collected up, you actually have a good range on how much of a problem the experts think wildfires will be next year. It'd be interesting to see how close they are, on average.

But feign outrage. Go ahead.

To be honest, I don't have a problem with this, and I consider myself to be fairly lefty-liberal. What next? Being outraged, OUTRAGED!!!11! that paramedics rely on very dark gallows humor to keep themselves sane?

It could be both.

I also have no problem with FAA staffers betting on how many people die in plane crashes
Or CDC staffers betting on how many children die of asthma
Or FDA staffers betting on how many people die of salmonella poisoning
Or Highway Traffic Safety Administration staffers betting on how many people die in car crashes
Or EPA staffers betting on how many people die of cancer from toxic waste...

OK, I do have a problem with this.

these all sound like fantastic closest to the pin bets to make during the slow holiday season at an agency office. maybe a british bookie will give me an over/under line for those.

though the epa bet probably will need to be removed from the board since attributing the cause of cancer is difficult at best.

In other related news, gallows humor not funny to people who don't work at the gallows.

Speaking as one who knows a thing or two about working with depressing situations, your options are to laugh or cry, you get to pick.
