I loath bing. I especially loath it because it is the default search utility on my schools grad library computers.

So based on current trends, Google will be #2 sometime in the next few years. Who knew?

Bing the Merciless.

Oh Subby dont be so sure about that. I work in an aging office and a lot of folks in here use Yahoo. It a wonder they can find anything on the intertubes

I used Bing to search for a cheap plane ticket a couple of weeks ago.

And...well, that's it. But it's popularity must have doubled around then.

I loved AltaVista back before Google. Nice, clean interface, and it told you how many times each word appeared, so you could guess where you should narrow your search terms.

Only if you are a whiny biatch...

For years, Google Search has been the highest quality web product I've ever used. It has remained consistently essential as an information-delivery mechanism. I typically hit it hundreds of times a day-on my phone, tablet, laptop and desktop. But with one update it wiped out all those years of loyalty and goodwill it had built up. Sure, I can opt out of social results with a click-but as with all things I don't want to have to opt out. I don't want to have to make that extra click. I want to enter a query, and have the most relevant results returned to me as quickly as possible. (And if Google genuinely doesn't think it's a big deal for people to take the extra step oft opting out, why has it focused so relentlessly on optimizing speed for so many years?)

Really? Its not that bad. In fact its probably as good as Google. I just happen to use Google because I have been using it since pretty much when it came out.

I can see hating Yahoo or whatever...

I'm thinking I'm screwed as one of the things I do at work, but also freelance, is SEO work. I think the new Google is going to be a nightmare.

Also, I think Google is pissed that nobody gives a rat's ass about Google+.

The only reason for this is because it's the default IE search engine for a lot of school and business networks.

/installed Chrome on my work computer to get around that silliness
//also, I'm reminded of the Altavista gag on Parks and Rec

The only reason Bing is making any headway is because Microsoft has covertly made it the default search engine referenced by all of its programs.

Yahoo is powered by Bing now. How can Bing overtake itself?

2012-01-12 06:34:49 PM
I've used bing accidentally about a dozen times due to getting the popup from mousing over their linkbombs in articles. After about the eighth bing search for "google" they stopped allowing me to search for things in the popup, instead going automatically to the relevent link associated with the linkbomb. I'm sure it wasn't personal.

MSN was the home page in IE at my last job. Plenty of their "article" links are actually Bing searches with the headline of the article you thought you were going to. The first time I realized that, I thought to myself, "Huh, that's how they're overtaking Yahoo."

I'd love to see how many people still have Bing as their default search, but continue to type in Google into the Bing search bar and search from there.

I doubt Bing would release that data.

Good.

Making your website ultimately machine readable with good semantic data is good.

Anything else that falls under the umbrella of "SEO" needs to just go the fark away.

WTF are they talking about?

I searched on "brennans new orleans". First result- their official home page. Later results are what you'd always see: yelp, tripadvisor, etc.

On the side- directions to the place.

Exactly. Clients of mine always ask if we do SEO along with design/programming. No. It doesn't work. Google spends billions-with-a-B on making sure their algorythym produces the most relevant results. Spending $1000 on SEO isn't going to do jack shiat. Google probably spends 80% of their R&D time/money essentially counter-acting SEO.

If SEO worked, Google would be a terrible search engine. Its not.

I was going to say something similar. The writer goes on about how awful this opt-out is. What's his solution? Do a search to essentially test out some new search engines and then pick a new one. Seems like it would be quicker to just opt-out.

A healthy and vibrant competitor ensures that Google doesn't get lazy and fat. I use both search engines. Both tend to find good results - which is important because people fall over themselves to come up with clever ways to get their sites more highly ranked and having a single search ecosystem won't help that.

2012-01-12 07:21:48 PM
I greatly prefer Google of 12 months ago to Google now.

I find Bing to be better the IE for searching videos, better format, and when you put the cursor over the image you get a preview of the video. The only thing that ever shows up on IE is Youtube.

I've never tested on search engine vs another. Are google's results THAT much better than bing or yahoo's such that the latter should be referred to as pieces of shiat? Is there that much of a difference? What am I missing?

How many people have you heard say, "[Yahoo/Bing] it if you don't believe me."?
