My son plays the flute. $10k is a good quality instrument, but nothing special at all. Even his beginner student grade one was $600

I have a replacement flute she can try out.

/Some call it a piccolo.

10 grand seems relatively inexpensive for a concert level instrument, and for the tools of your livelihood...

Insurance on that would be inexpensive as well. Tsk.

as someone who sells musical instruments, i am getting a kick out of these comments.

a) if you paid $600 for a student grade flute, you paid twice as much as you needed to for a quality, brand name instrument.

b) $10,000 is an average price for an excellent, orchestral level instrument. A flute of this level can be had for about $9000 to $15000, depending on the brand. The article mentioned that it was a Brannen, which is a great flute, handmade in Boston. $10,000 is about right.

You do not need to pay more than that. Anything that costs more than that is either overpriced, or it is made from gold or platinum.

GreenSun: I never knew flutes were that expensive! How can a little thing be as expensive as a grand piano :O

Because they make they out of things like silver, gold, and platinum. My sister has a full ride to the University of Illinois on a flute performance scholarship, and the flute she got before her junior year is solid sterling silver and has a solid platinum mouthpiece.

Her flute cost more than my car.

Yes. When he is playing that flute for nickles tossed into his tattered ball cap on some seedy street corner. He'll be reduced to playing "Thick As A Brick" through tears of shame.

You may be joking, but they do make some higher end flutes out of gold. They do have better tone, though that is more likely due to better engineering. There are also flutes with golden keys only (the tube being regular silver).

Perhaps, but I didn't feel like going to Ebay to purchase something I didn't know much about

It's a Yamaha YFL 221. What's your price on that? Amazon has it for $750. I'm sure if I knew a ton about instruments I'd have been able to find a bargain somewhere, but that's what his teacher recommended.

I agree, my current mandolin only cost 750 bucks but I guard it like it was the launch codes for our nukes, I am currently saving up the 4K needed to have Summit Mandolins make me a custom one, when I get that one it is gonna have armed escorts when I take it with me (or at least insurance).
