It's a shame that a guy threw that much of his life away over booze. Then again, I almost threw my life away over booze so I completely understand. Everybody's bottom is different, fortunately mine wasn't quite so dramatic.

I hope things work out for him, and I hope he gets into a less-stressful, more reputable line of work that suits him. Yeah, the money is good, but agents whore themselves out and sell their souls for their commissions.

Steinberg? That doesn't sound like an agent's name.

Is it just me or did he have a "world is out to get me" vibe? He kept saying he was responsible, but that was usually followed by a "but".

My father was an alcoholic, so I got to see that. At least to me, it sounds like he hasn't accepted full responsibility for he actions, no matter how many times he says it.

Or, maybe the world is out to get him, what do I know?

well if you only have one client and he's a prima donna receiver, the long-term business model is a little shaky.

/of course the shakes happen...

Typical, though, when you consider we live in a cynical world. A cynical world.

He's an egomaniacal asshole. I hope he gets through to recovery, but until he puts aside his own inflated sense of himself, he'll never get better.

and he likes to tell himself he's jerry maguire, thats about it. he bears no resemblance whatsoever other than being an agent.

I'm sorry to hear that he has come to this, although i am glad that he is trying to turn things around for himself. I had a chance to meet him when i was in school (CSB, I know) and he seemed like a very nice guy. I know that one of his requirements at the time was that he would only take a client if that client agreed to open a charitable foundation. I kinda liked that about him.

But as someone going through the same problems he has faced, I know how quickly things can fall apart. And if he seems to have an attitude that "the world is out to get me", I can't say that I blame him. When you're in that position, it sure seems like that's the way things are.

My bottom was similar to his. I'm just glad it wasn't as public. But some of my business fark ups do come up with a google search of my name.

It took me 18 months of sitting on my ass to figure out how to move on/succeed.

/I was always positive, but sometimes a guy just has to sit on his ass for a while.
//but not forever

Agreed. The guy thinks that hosting super bowl parties and visiting the troops in Iraq is "helping the less fortunate".
He doesn't do charity without it having both PR and tax implications. Maybe TFA was written badly, but this doesn't sound like a "very nice guy" to me, it sounds like the guy is a whiny yuppie scum asswipe attempting to rationalize himself. He's one step above that guy who has to be at the gym in 26 minutes.

I agree with everyone else here that this guy is still all about himself and making money. It's spin control. The guy is a essentially a shark that has been ripped apart by other sharks and left for dead, complaining to swimmers about how he's the victim.

The "alcoholism" seems to be a bit of a red herring here.

The basic problem he lays out is that
A) One of his agency employees took a $300k loan from one of their clients, in violation of NFLPA rules (and agency policy).
B) The NFLPA fined his agency
C) The client in question fired Steinberg's agency, but took up with a NEW agency that included one of Steinberg's former employees (not clear if it's the same one from A)
D) Steinberg claims that this "stealing clients" was against the contract the employee signed, and sued - successfully negating the agent-client contract signed by the NEW agency and the player
E) The lawyers representing the player in the case of the $300k loan vs. Steinberg's agency are putting him through the wringer, in a way that is keeping him from getting re-certified by the NFLPA to represent players.

So that sucks for him. Usually though when this kind of dispute stretches out for several years it's because someone (usually both sides) is trying to make a point, get a "win" or refusing to admit they were wrong. I don't see how he couldn't have made these problems go away faster - unless HE's part of the problem (not alcohol).
