Councilman Kevin Hall told the council he wants to develop and introduce an ordinance at the next meeting which will give police officers,
at their discretion
, the ability to tow cars "which create a hazard" during the plowing.
That sounds like a horrible idea.

What a gong show of a discussion. Here are a few Canadian solutions to this issue:
Roads:
1) mark snow routes. No parking on them within 24 hours of a snowfall of more than (x) amount.
2) Despite what dipshiat in this meeting said, not every route can be a snow route. People need to move their cars
somewhere
.
sidestreets: if they are critical and will be parked on, allow parking on one side only (can be seasonal). This allows both a lane to be plowed, and a place for the snow to be piled.
Municipal lots: No overnight parking permitted. OR a less restrictive no overnight parking after snowfall of xx amount. But you better bury the first guy that tests this limit and let his entombed vehicle serve as a warning to others.

Our city just rams the plows through anyway and buries the cars under eight feet of packed, frozen slush. Cheap and effective.

C) Fark New Jersey.
D) What constitutes a "hazard"?
E) Seriously, New Jersey is shiat.

He argued that this type of discretionary power "makes the system and the job more efficient ... I believe that using police discretion is useful for enforcing laws.
Does that include the discretion to strap a late middle aged mentally ill man to a chair and kill him with pepper spray?

Ummm...in Montreal they do this already....except it isn't the cops who decide...just a city worker.
Now granted...they do come by 24h in advance and put up signs saying that between x hour and y hour you can't park here.
Otherwise the snow removal guys would never get the job done.
Oh...the tow guys also don't take it to a pound...they just tow it to another street. You call a number, give them your plate number and they tell you where it is. (and there is a ticket in the window).
I moved off island because I hated digging my car out of a snow bank to go to work and the later....digging my car a new parking spot.

Yeah, but the problem is, it will be illegal to park in EVERY street when it snows. To comply with this ordinance, residents would need to park in the next town over and hang out there until the snow's melted.

Contrary to the comment on the article, some cities do make money off of tows. At least they do here. Is New Jersey different? In Massachusetts, Lowell gets a kickback from the tow company while Springfield charges a tow fee on top of the company's bill. It is also standard practice to ticket cars that are towed from snow emergency routes. Somerville made a lot of money from snow route towing a few winters ago until public outrage forced refunds because it had not actually snowed.

After reading the article, it's not illegal to park anywhere on the streets when it snows. It's posting signs and giving out warnings about when the snow gets to a level that may be unsafe. Living in Minnesota most my life this is a good thing. There are times when cars need to be moved to clear the snow just in case of an emergency

Where I live everyone has a driveway.People still park their cars on the street even though there is a township ordinance that overnight parking on any street is a ticketable offense. Even in the winter they leave their cars on the street and it creates a problem during heavy snow. I've never seen anyone get a ticket for it.

2) Despite what dipshiat in this meeting said, not every route can be a snow route. People need to move their cars somewhere.
When I went to school in Providence, Rhode Island they would declare a "Snow Emergency" without warning, sometimes in the middle of the night, for as little as an inch of snow. Once declared the tow companies were free to troll the streets and tow every single car they could find on any street in the entire city. Such a useless racket; it produced money I'm sure, but the streets were none cleaner and nobody had an answer to the basic question: "Where exactly can I park?" when it happened.

Everybody in Berkeley Heights, EVERYBODY, can put their cars in their driveways. This is no podunk town, and the presence of 1%ers in some parts of town make this discussion the way it is.
The only reason there are cars in the street is because it's the third, fourth, or fifth car that particular family has.

Pussy! No: you get a few Komatsu D575A-3SD bulldozers. They're 41 feet long, weigh 150 tons, and can push 480,000 pounds of crap while sucking 440 gallons of diesel a day. That'll clear Bugwad Avenue, and recycle what was on it simultaneously.......

Ding ding ding. This is not the only town with this law. We got driveways up in this bi-otch. My town has just added "no parking with snow on the ground" to "no parking ever, 3am-5am" in its ordinances.

Or you be a responsible citizen for once and you dig your car out and move it so the plow can finish the streets.
I mean is it asking too much to be a responsible member of society these days?
Would it cut into your toddlers and tiaras marathon?

It was also in the mid 40's today here in Jersey. It has been an unseasonably warm winter for us this year.

Where I live many towns post an ordinance such as no parking on any public street 2am to 6am Nov.1 - Mar.31. They may ticket, but will never tow, unless a plow is impeded. In more congested areas the odd-even scheme helps more. This is where parking is allowed, in snow emergencies, on odd-numbered sides of streets on odd-numbered days and vice-versa.
lack of warmth

Watch enough you tube videos of cars sliding into parked cars did for me. Don't want the plows hitting it. People around the corner park on the street all the time. Busy road on bus route. They get nailed all the time and they have driveways. I don't get it, why have the hassle?
