This. As evil as Al Qaeda is, they can use this to manipulate civilians into joining them. The field is their playground. Better give them nothing to propagate against you than anything at all. They may bullshiat about what our troops do, but they don't need actual evidence to convince people that America is bad.

We're trying to win a war while convincing the locals that we are respectful of their ethnicity, religion and culture. To do so, we've got to show that we don't take pleasure in killing their countrymen, and do so only because it's necessary.

Pissing on corpses accomplishes none of this. It makes us look like arrogant bullies. It is completely dishonorable. I don't think it has ever been OK for American soldiers or marines to desecrate enemy corpses.

There used to be a time when we could claim the moral high ground in our military affairs. If you let revenge be a justification for your actions then there is no action that you can't justify.

Treat the dead with respect whenever possible. Especially for Muslim fighters, who have strict traditions regarding how a body should be handled. Twenty years down the road, do we want the Afghanis to remember how the Americans killed their men and pissed on their corpses, or do we want them to remember how we fought a group of bad men but treated them with the same respect we gave our own soldiers?

What do you want our legacy to be? Any choice has long-lasting consequences.

Anyone that goes through US military training is VERY aware that everything they do while wearing that uniform reflects on the US. It's drilled in there pretty well, and it ties into why they're so strict about the dress codes. The Pentagon is well-aware of just how easily a single soldier's actions can create a huge international incident.

These soldiers were undisciplined, but I'd wager that probably has to do with some lax officers. If not full-out dishonorable discharge, I'd say they need to be knocked down a rank.
