Being born in Mexico is not what 'Hispanic' means CNN.

2012-01-12 10:54:34 AM
Definitely no. It says it right in the article that his ancestors never received Mexican citizenship. You might have a cultural argument to make but they were Mormon settlers who moved to escape persecution. Mormons tend to have very closed communities so its highly likely those communities didn't intermix all that much with real Mexicans.

This is more desperate of a reach than Rubio contorting his past seven different ways in fleeting attempts to gain traction as a cuban refugee.

The morman church is excited about this tidbit.
I think half of the church membership comes from south and central America.
Let the missionaries waive THAT fact around when they're out looking for baptism numbers!

And not one of those kids will ever have to really work a day in their lives, and would never even entertain the thought of serving their country in any capacity (unless you count being a future lobbyist as service).

Does this mean that we have to worry that Romney is an Aztlan sleeper agent and he's working for the Reconquista?

2012-01-12 10:56:12 AM
TFA does make a valid point about writing off the LAtino vote. Now with Romney embracing anti-immigration law writers on the campaign trail, he's really shot himself in the foot with Latinos. TFA is correct to point out that a GOP candidate would need 30% or better of their vote to win - right now, Romney barely cracks 20%.

2012-01-12 10:56:31 AM
Well, if his father immigrated to the US from Mexico as a child, sure. That fits the definition, right?

[rtfa]

Huh. That's.... a lot more complicated.

He immigrated from Mexico, but was never "Mexican" and has no (?) Mexican heritage?

2012-01-12 10:56:57 AM
I heard Romney's grandfather did some missionary work in Kenya, so he's not really eligible to be President.

I don't know. I think we'll need to closely examine his long form birth certificate to find out.

Wher birf certificate Rommy? wher?

I say "yes".

Born in America = American
Born in Africa = African
Born in Mexico = Mexican

Being Morman has nothing to do with it.

/hates Romney

Some Americans don't choose who to vote for president solely based on the color of their skin or their ethnic heritage. The people who do this most frequently are retired Republicans living off of Social Security and Medicare.

2012-01-12 10:58:59 AM
Could Mitt Romney be America's next pasty white, out-of-touch, right-wing load of a President?

I'm calling the race right now.

This is Fark's headline of the year, 2012.

2012-01-12 10:59:32 AM
Romney's father, George, was born in Chihuahua, Mexico

So, I presume all those people claiming that Obama doesn't fit their particular definition of 'natural-born' because his father wasn't born in America will be campaigning just as vigorously against Romney getting the nomination?

Wait, they aren't? Whyever could that be ...

On that same note, if my white relative was born in Africa and came to the United States does that make him African-American?

So Romeny's dad was an American citizen born abroad (if he were a Mexican citizen he wouldn't have been able to run for president.) I wonder why that was? Ah, a quick Google says it's because Mitt's grandparents fled to Mexico because America was persecuting thier polyamorous ways. I wonder why Romney hasn't brought that up?

2012-01-12 11:02:23 AM
Stupid sh*t like this is why no one likes you anymore CNN. We all get together and laugh at you, you stupid f*cking whore. You got by for so long by being "pretty" without actually developing a personality that now you're just a dried up, useless husk aching to put out for anyone who will validate your sad, miserable, empty existence.

I am curious how this works, if you are a PR firm working for Romney and you want Ruben Navarrette, Jr to put his name on a press release and pretend it is an editorial of original thought what does it cost?

I don't expect him to be president; Mormon, Hispanic, or otherwise

2012-01-12 11:06:49 AM
You know, I don't give a fark about how many wives Mitt Romney's great grandfather had; my ancestors where horse thieves and Canadians. I don't care about what sky wizard Mitt Romney believes in, everyone religion is equally foolish.

I care about the fact that Mitt Romney has a terrible tax plan that will further push this country into the hands of the 1%. As a resident of Massachusetts, I can tell you that Mitt Romney is a terrible leader.

Those are the things I care about.

This will certainly make it harder for Obama supporters to play the racist card.

FTFA: ...his father, a self-made man who worked his way up from nothing to become head of American Motors Corporation, governor of Michigan and a Republican presidential candidate in 1968 -- told a crowd at the Rochester Opera House in New Hampshire that his father was born in Mexico and came to the United States at 5.

Huh?
How was his father elegible to be POTUS if he was born in Mexico? What am I missing here?

Born to American parents = natural born citizen. It doesn't matter where he was born.

At least one of his parents were American citizens, which would give him automatic citizenship.

So what you are saying is that Willard MITT Romney's great grandparents were destroying the sanctity of marriage even as far back as the late 1850s?

The situation and article overflow with irony. It's an irony overdose.

Hispanic generally refers to having Zapotec/Aztec/Mayan ancestry, not "being from Mexico". Lots of people of different races come from Mexico, most notably the Spanish (usually referred to as Castilian after the dialect of Spanish spoken in most of Spain), who are mostly white like the rest of Europe. There is also a large presence of US immigrant populations, who likewise are generally from the various European and north african races. I would venture that Romney's family is one of the latter groups, as most of them immigrated for religious reasons -- there's a big mennonite community in northern Mexico, for instance.

2012-01-12 11:18:09 AM
Waitaminnit.

How could Romney's father run for President in 1968 if he was Mexican?

(I know, for the same reason born-in-Panama John McCain could)

But Mitt's now claiming his Mexican immigrant Presidential-candidate father gives him immigrant cred?
