Gee, that's like the local burger joint offering free fries to get you into the doors.

"Hey, come visit the hospital to see your loved ones, and stay for the Legionnaire's!"

Colons, not semicolons.

/semicolon languages were the downfall of programming

Very nice. That's a grade A Choice headline you got there. 'Course the young whippersnappers won't get it...

Is that headline in BASIC...?

2012-01-12 12:05:48 PM
Am I crazy - or did they manage to write a story about contracting Legionaires at a hospital without actually mentioning the name of the hospital?

Endless loop: see Loop, endless.

I think I see a bug in your program, Subby.

This was mentioned on NPR yesterday. This is a much better explanation Link

hp6sa: Am I crazy - or did they manage to write a story about contracting Legionaires at a hospital without actually mentioning the name of the hospital?

Yeah. The hospital was named in a JSOnline story two years ago when the outbreak actually happened. Apparently it took this long to complete the study & publish the press release. Since the water wall was shut down immediately after the outbreak started and has never run since, it probably wasn't important for the purpose of the study.

This seems appropriate to this thread:

Body Ritual Among the Nacirema

Pay particular attention to the part about the Latipso.

There's nothing new under the sun.

#include <person.h>
#include <hospital.h>

const Hospital *nearest_hospital = PRINCETON_PLAINSBORO_TEACHING_HOSPITAL;

get_hospital( Person *self )
{
self->infect(LEGIONAIRRES_DISEASE);
return nearest_hospital;
}

go_to_hospital( Person *self )
{
Hospital *hospital=get_hospital(self);
if (self->infected)
go_to_hospital(self);
}

main(int argc, char**argv)
{
Person self = get_local_person();
got_to_hospital(self);
}

There, much better.

Doesn't that take 1 keystroke from the user and assign that numeric Legionairres string?

I don't always go to the hospital, but when I do, I certainly prefer getting MRSA infections. Legionnaires is so pedestrian.

here's the missing code:

hospital:
call rape_patient
goto 20

You're thinking INKEY$. I think GET delivers bytes to/from the serial ports, and needs to be something like GET #1, LE.

Either you didn't read it, or you missed the joke.

It's OK. There's numerous examples of Anthropology students citing this "research" in papers.

The point in my citing it was that the Nacirema only go to the Latipso when they are very sick, and almost all then die, despite the ministrations of the medicine men.

actually the getLegionnaires function should be "self.infected = true"... My space to nbsp; filter ate it.

Oh well, can't win them all.

While Legionella has been reported in other places involving water, Ohl says Americans should not be afraid of walking past decorative fountains in general.

What is this? A news article about a smallish disease outbreak that doesn't attempt to scare readers silly? This is truly a commendable-

"I don't think people should be afraid of this," he said. "It could just as easily been the water system in your own home, from a shower at the YMCA...it's really impossible to reduce your risk."

Yeah, subby here... I agree NPR's coverage was better. I heard the story on NPR first. I chose the ABC News link because all I could find at the NPR site was a transcript of the broadcast version. Thanks for the info-link!

--- You are likely to be eaten by a grue.

I remember when an AppleBASIC BBS crashed, I was left with the prompt.
Having a Trash-80 III, I opened my buffer and captured the whole code after typing LIST.
I was gonna convert it to TRS-80 BASIC but there were no modem commands in TRS-80 BASIC like there are for AppleBASIC!

That reminds me of when a software coder was found dead in his shower. In his hand was a bottle of shampoo that read "lather, rinse, repeat."
